Phone calls from mcps at 5:40 AM

Every action they take lessens my faith in them.

This is the last straw! Can the BoE fire McKnight for this?

This is OP. I have a child away in college and can't/won't turn off notifications, just incase. I will block the number they called from this morning.
I hope principal interns also understand that the emails, texts and phone calls were enough. We didn't need to jump on Remind and get that message out.there again.

So set your kid as a favorite and accept calls from favorites. Or set the setting so that if someone calls twice in five minutes it notifies you.

This is what I do.

THIS!! The best thing I ever set on my phone. No more errant calls in the middle of the night.

This doesn't work if you have kids away at college, young adults living on their own or elderly parents.
The point of emergencies is you don't know WHO would be calling to alert you. It might be a neighbor, police, dorm RA, president of the college, girlfriend, or a stranger who found their car in a ditch
School delay isn't an emergency and shouldn't be blasted out at 5 am when it was texted, posted and emailed.
This isn't 1970

This person could only contact you using your DC’s own phone.

How do I turn off these calls from MCPS?

Give them a fake phone number like many parents do.

My favorite part of this is that you think everyone's response to MCPS closing or delayed opening is to be able to sleep in, as opposed to getting up early so they can drive the kids across town to Grandma's and still get to work on time, or whatever.

Given that there wasn't a lot of speculation that there would be a snow day or delay today, calling makes sense. People need to know so they don't make a mistake like sending kids out to wait for the bus and then driving to work.

As much as I criticize MCPS, with parents like you and the PP, I can see why MCPS gives up on you morons and throws their hands up.

The fact that people cannot grasp is just....depressing.

Right! It's not like you would want MCPS to be able to contact you by phone in case of an emergency, or anything!

This thread perfectly explains why teachers are leaving in droves and cite parents as the main problem. (This does not apply to the reasonable posters here. Unfortunately OP isn't the exception...moronic people like this are the rule/standard.)

Buses begin around 6:15 in some locations. Do you prefer a light knock at the door? A letter that would arrive Friday?

+1
They were actually late on their own decision. They are supposed to notify by 5:30 a.m. according to their own policies.
We were almost out the door to take DC to the bus.

They put the announcement on their website right before 5:30 -- I was awake at 5:15 and kept checking, and I got an Alert MCPS email at 5:27. But the text came a bit later.

I was awake too. I checked the website and the time and they had a message about a delay but the date on that was from like six months ago and looked like a mistake. It took them about 20 minutes or more to fix the problem.

I know this is off topic, but do you escort your HS child to the bus stop?

DP. My kid’s magnet bus stop is almost 2 miles from our house. I don’t make her walk it in the morning and wouldn’t be comfortable with her riding her bike on a highway in the dark. She’s not old enough to drive yet, so I drive her to the bus stop. Most of the kids are driven to the bus stop by a parent.

Bus stop is really far away. It's a 25 minute drive. No way to walk.

I’ve never given fake contact info, but I am a teacher so I know there’s a large percentage of parents who don’t want schools to be able to reach them.

If I'd planned out my life so poorly that I had to put children in a car and drive them around on unsafe roads to get.to the free babysitter I guess I'd be mad on the internet too.

I actually had my phone on do not disturb (it’s automatic, every night— 11-7pm) and something must have been off about the setting because the mcps call came through anyway!!! Must figure out what went wrong before the next call.
