this. unusually homogenous in thought, culture, activities, background, interests. if your kid was worried that at (insert top 20 school here), they might end up on a dorm floor with kids who they (seemingly) had nothing in common with on that very first day .. then BC is your school. your dorm will be full of kids just like you! |
This was not true for me - but I came from a less wealthy and more diverse back ground. I loved BC. |
And BC has many more sports at high level, the community is more supportive/collaborative and cohesive, and if you aren't into politics/govt/IR Boston is a better city - especially for college students. |
| Great location. More conservative than other MA schools. Somewhat religious--think Villanova-ish. Well-recognized locally. |
What does this mean? Do kids at BC and Villanova actually attend mass regularly? Somehow I doubt it. Or are they just Catholic kids whose parents made them do religious education through confirmation? |
NP. The latter. There are subsets of people who do attend mass regularly, though only students in those subsets are aware of each other. Most do not attend regularly. |
This. I had friends that I found out later attended mass. I never knew they were attending. They didn't tend to announce it and there were likely many options to sneak a mass in during the week (not just Sunday but even on Sunday). I only remember attending a large mass once - the memorial mass for BC classmates who had been killed on the bombed Lockerbie flight. I'm sure any school would have held a memorial for something like that. They probably hold a 9/11 related mass - many BC alum killed that day - some with prominent stories. |
| Right now BC's football team is getting crushed by Florida State. |
Nothing new - but I'm sure the kids had (are having) fun tailgating. |
And I mean this in a good way. It's still fun to have big football and reasons to gather. |

Not sure some of these commenters are familiar with today's BC. Lot of high stat kids, and class more diverse than described on this thread. DS is a sophomore there- non-Catholic, 1540 SAT, 4.0 UW, 12 APs, recreationally sporty, and has met a lot of similar kids there. Friends from TX, CA, IL, WA, in addition to mid-Atlantic and New England. Racially and economically diverse. Agree there are a lot of UMC and wealthy, good looking, athletic kids but it's a pretty big place and there are plenty of "regular people."
Looking at Class of 2027 stats - Average SAT/ACT 1511/34. Would not call that academically average. School spirit is very strong and attendance at sports event is high. DS and friends go into Boston plenty but love campus life. |
For a rich east coast private school that is a so-called “top feeder”, this is should be a lot bigger: https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/about/notable-alumni.html BC does a really good job at maintaining class - it does a poor job of taking rich kids to the hyper elite or poor kids to the rich Hence it’s a finishing school It takes umc kids and gives them a “stamp of approval” to maintain their status pre-bc to post-bc |
Bc doesn’t get black kids like Deion (fsu alum). The black kids that go to bc are literally built different than the kids that go to fsu. Physiognomy is real Bc would beat fsu at hockey |
+1. My DD is a freshman, non-Catholic and agree with everything you said. Her friend group includes people from all over the US too. |
They lost by a touchdown. I don’t call that getting crushed. For a #3 team, FSU was less than impressive. |
