Are some people just cheerful, or is she being fake?

My sister is so nice to strangers. To family, when you really know her, she's a monster.

That poor person that OP hired is walking into a toxic work environment. In fact, she will have no clue what is happening, with OP hating on her before she started!

You sound like a narcissist. Narcs can't understand that other people are different than their own twisted, sick fragile egos!

+1

And yet somehow you can't understand that other people do not enjoy life and have personalities different from you. That doesn't make them narcissists. It might make YOU one, though.

Other people do not accuse cheerful people of being fake and asking if other people are just cheerful. You did.

You sound like a cheerful, friendly, not-hateful person who is great company! 😀

Passive aggressive, narc behavior on display from you.

Such a strange thing to say!

OP, I have noticed people who are from the DC/MD/VA area are less trustful, and maybe a little more bitter, for whatever real or perceived reason. They also tend to pride themselves on being "introverts". My friends who have resided all around the world (or at least all around the nation!) tend to take themselves less seriously, be more accepting of all kinds of people (including egads, extroverts!), and are more live and let live types - which I did not understand until having lived elsewhere for a short period.

Point being, not everything is about you, and the smartest people I know are also good with people (including being personable and friendly) - I try to learn from them, instead of being paranoid and accusatory. Try it!

I'm not sure about the international comment. Dutch and German people are known for their blunt nature. French people aren't that chatty and avoid personal questions. Some foreigners when confronted with Americans' positive nature are perplexed by this. Acceptance isn't the same as over-friendliness.

I hired someone like that, too. In her case, the chipper attitude was partly fake, and she was manipulative.

On the other hand, I have a friend who is generally happy and looks on the bright side. I never feel manipulated by this person.

Interesting how OP has no self-reflection.
