DeSantis purging Florida universities of historically black frats & sororities?

Anonymous
They need to be like the more liberal colleges and ban all frats and sororities.

Outside of the frats, I can see banning racial dorms that the colleges are running.

WTF. Why are white people so scared of history? I wonder.

And in a sign of how fraught the political landscape has become, one publisher created multiple versions of its social studies material, softening or eliminating references to race — even in the story of Rosa Parks — as it sought to gain approval in Florida.

The Florida Citizens Alliance, a conservative group, has urged the state to reject 28 of the 38 textbooks that its volunteers reviewed, including more than a dozen by McGraw Hill, a major national publisher.

In a summary of its findings submitted to the state last month, the group complained that a McGraw Hill fifth-grade textbook, for example, mentioned slavery 189 times within a few chapters alone. Another objection: An eighth-grade book gave outsize attention to the “negative side” of the treatment of Native Americans, while failing to give a fuller account of their own acts of violence, such as the Jamestown Massacre of 1622, in which Powhatan warriors killed more than 300 English colonists.

In an attempt to cater to Florida, at least one publisher made significant changes to its materials, walking back or omitting references to race, even in its telling of the Rosa Parks story.

In the current lesson on Rosa Parks, segregation is clearly explained: “The law said African Americans had to give up their seats on the bus if a white person wanted to sit down.”

But in the initial version created for the textbook review, race is mentioned indirectly.

“She was told to move to a different seat because of the color of her skin,” the lesson said.

In the updated version, race is not mentioned at all.

“She was told to move to a different seat,” the lesson said, without an explanation of segregation.

It’s unclear which of the new versions was officially submitted for review. The second version — which doesn’t mention race — was available on the publisher’s website until last week.

Except he's not doing any of the things you so breathlessly listed.

He also never said bloggers in Florida have to register, but it was widely reported he did. When he explained he had nothing to do with it, the headlines ran that he was "running away from it." He could sue them for defamation. I totally understand why he refuses to give interviews to most media outlets. They will print complete lies, because now they need to make him look worse than Trump and that's a difficult feat.

Exactly. I hope he continues to stay above the fray and not engage with the usual outrage-mongers who would love for him to react.

You guys said the same thing about him banning books. We’ve all seen pics of bookshelves in Florida classrooms stripped of all the terrifying books like “Neither” and books about Rosa Parks.

Your disgusting party writes these laws so cleverly and presents you your counter argument - “it’s not real!” It’s the legislative equivalent of “can’t you take a joke?” and it’s every bit as toxic and annoying.

Post those pics here, because if you are talking about the pics I saw, it was a pic of a library being renovated that somebody posted trying to whip up outrage.
And, why do you want books with pornography available in school libraries?

Youth biographies about Hank Aaron and Roberto Clememte are pornographic?

Nice try. These books were not banned.

They were pulled off the shelves “for review.” Why?

You will need to ask the officials who pulled them for review. They have NOT been banned by any district.
Fact is - these are some of the books found by parents on Florida school shelves....

Gender Queer: A Memoir – an explicit, pornographic book showing sex acts.
Flamer – a graphic book about young boys performing sexual acts at a summer camp.
This Book Is Gay – a book containing instructions on “the ins and outs of gay sex.”
Let’s Talk About It – a book that contains graphic depictions about how to masturbate for males and females.

Spin away...
Pulled off the shelves "for review" is still pulled off the shelves and until they are returned, they have effectively been banned.
And it was done at the behest of DeSantis.

They have been returned. You need to keep up!

They've been approved to be returned after being off the shelf for an entire year. 1) why would such books have been put under the miscroscope in the first place? 2) Do you have evidence any libraries have actually returned them to their shelves?

Sure. The legislation just acts on its own..

He didnt sponsor or endorse the legislation. He is a governor.

Tell me you don't understand legislative politics without using the words....

Okay genius, explain his exact role with this bill. Not what you think he WILL do, but what he has done.

DP but you’re making him sound like an inept governor who has no influence on his party members and the legislation they propose.

I'm not portraying him as inept. As a governor, he doesnt introduce bills. He could endorse them or support them by telling people it is part of the R agenda in Florida. He could say things like "get this bill to my desk so I can sign it!"

I've googled and I could just be missing it, but he doesnt appear to have discussed this blll in public. The Hill notes that he hasnt said whether he will sign it. The only connection that can be made is that he is an R in Florida and an R introduced this bill. That is a tenuou connection at best.

The bill also doesnt do what this thread says it does. Its a lot to break down but I encourage reading the Snopes article on it.

So he either wields no influence on his fellow Florida Republicans or he agrees with the bil

He's a governor, not a dictator. The state legislators, regardless of party, can introduce legislation that the governor may or may not support or sign.

Well he's wishy washy if he won't comment on such a bill one way or another. And if he disapproves of the bill he should try to influence his fellow republicans to withdraw it or change it. But that hasn't happened. Which means he's either bad at influencing or he agrees and doesn't want to try to influence.

By the way, to influence is not the same as dictating. Did you not know that?

How about you stop your idiotic persecution of thousands of books, the overwhelming majority of which are perfectly harmless?

Read the texts. Historically black frats and sororities advocate for diversity - it’s in their founding documents and charters. They would be banned under the new law from being a beneficiary of any university spending for “advocating” for diversity:

(2) A Florida College System institution, state
282 university, Florida College System institution direct-support
283 organization, or state university direct-support organization
284 may not expend any state or federal funds to promote, support,
285 or maintain any programs or campus activities that:
286 (a) Promote the concepts listed in s. 1000.05(4)(a);
287 (b) Advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion;
288 (c) Promote or engage in political or social activism; or
289 (d) Include or espouse, as government speech or expressive
290 activity of the Florida College System institution or state
291 university or its direct-support organization speaking or acting
292 on the Florida College System institution's or state
293 university's behalf, preferential treatment or special benefits
294 to individuals on the basis of race, color, national origin,
295 sex, disability, or religion.

Such organizations could not operate on campus in any capacity because that would benefiting from university spending. No use of conference rooms, hanging a flyer, putting up a table in the quad, etc.

That section seems unconstitutional on it face.

Why? What kind of hell hole do you want to send us to that political leaders can “pull books for review”. That’s creepy as ****. That is not freedom. It’s book banning. Which historically has always been a bad idea.

You mean the way the left tried (and failed) to ban "Irreversible Damage"? Oh.
DP

DP glad you agree that the selection of books in libraries should be left to librarians.

They've been approved to be returned after being off the shelf for an entire year. 1) why would such books have been put under the miscroscope in the first place? 2) Do you have evidence any libraries have actually returned them to their shelves?

DP. I suggest you 1) learn how to google and 2) stop your idiotic fear-mongering.

DP. This is unsatisfactory. Why were they, and 10,000 other school library books on a list in the first place? Who nominated them for the list, and why?
How about you stop your idiotic persecution of thousands of books, the overwhelming majority of which are perfectly harmless?

"Unsatisfactory"!!?!  My word, no one answers to you. Can you even read? The answers to all your questions are located within the article.

So, you still can't provide any solid reason why books on Hank Aaron or Roberto Clemente were even subject to a review. Got it.

Here, dum dum. Since you are clearly unable to click on the link yourself:

Topic One: Books from Perfection Learning

1. The district purchased almost 1,300 titles in 2021. When we received that order, more than 1,100 titles went directly to the classrooms.
2. The order included almost 180 book titles from the Essential Voices collection, which we purchased to increase diversity of writers, characters, topics, and viewpoints in our classroom libraries.
3. When we received those books, we quickly became aware that the delivery included titles we did not order. We collected those books from schools and held them in district storage until our media specialists and others could review them. (Note: We have two media specialists at the district level, and their primary responsibility is to support school instruction).
4. When we reviewed the books, we sent 105 titles from this diverse collection to classrooms last fall.
5. We sent 47 book titles back to Perfection Learning. Fourteen of these were sent back because we didn’t order them. Others returned were titles that we ordered but upon review, we determined they would not comply with new legislation or were not appropriate for elementary aged children.
6. We held 27 titles as we awaited state guidance to determine the appropriate grade levels and placement (classroom library or media center) for these books.
7. Media specialists received training from the Florida Department of Education in January 2023 after returning from winter break.
8. As of February 13, 2023, all 27 of those titles have been reviewed and approved for designated grade levels, including the books about Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron.
