Is Tech not deferring this round? Why are people only posting about being waitlisted?

Did something drastic and devastating happen to your financial situation between November and now? If your financial situation is basically the same as it was 3 months ago, and you already knew she wouldn't go even if offered a spot, why apply?

I'm not the PP you are replying to - but perhaps they had hoped for Merit aid as a potential part of the package? I know OOS families that received merit aid.

Don’t owe you an explanation, but she applied far and wide and has been looking for scholarships too. We had no idea she would even get into UMD when she applied early action to VT. DH and I have 5 VT degrees between us, and we love it there so we were happy to pay the fee for her to apply there. But no, we don’t plan to pay $200k+ for an undergrad degree when UMD is cheaper and has a higher-ranked program.

DS got waitlisted. Applied to Business/Finance. 4.2W GPA. Full IB diploma candidate. Good extracurriculars. Part time job - he works 8 hours a week all year long. Caucasian male. He was deferred from UVA last week.

That still doesn’t explain why you had her apply if you had no intent to send her. You knew she wasn’t getting a scholarship

It’s ridiculous to deny high achieving kids because for a hot second they wanted to major in engineering but if given the choice to be admitted under a generalized major they might have chosen that. VT was my daughter’s first choice and she would have never applied engineering had she known they were going to deny her. She had a 4.5 gpa! Yet her first Gen boyfriend got in with a 3.7! Grrrr

Whatever.

They are making a concerted effort to increase the number of URM students. If you are Caucasian applying for a popular major, you’ll have a high hurdle.

Know several kids that are URMs that were waitlisted along with Caucasian kids from our FCPS HS - all good students. However, they all applied for competitive majors. Odds are good they will get pulled from the waitlist. The OOS applicant pool is what impacts VT more as they admit a high number of OOS and want to see what the yield is.

And why does that matter to you? Nobody owes you any explanation.

Some people really have to learn the hard way that VT is no one's safety school.

Isn’t it possible to be denied in one major but accepted into another?
Five years ago my nephew was rejected from engineering but admitted to the school itself.

Not anymore. They used to do that, but they stopped several years ago

Ugh sorry to hear this. I'm curious what you, your DS, your DS's counselor, etc thought his chances of acceptance were? Looks like he did not submit test scores?
