Never heard of Charles Allen before today but he’s not a person to blame here. Blame lax gun laws (a uniquely American issue) and lack of mental health services.

I’d never heard of him either. I’m a lifelong dem and long term dc resident. I find his language in the clip troubling. Why does he refer to the murdered WMATA employee as “loss of life” as if it’s a passive thing, like a misplaced wallet? It would make more sense to put equal attention on the systemic mental health failure and the systemic security failure (and the person) who shot and injured people and shot and killed the wmata employee. Why is it not ok to say this?

I didn’t find his language to be passive, uncaring or disrespectful. Just my opinion. I’m the poster you responded to.

Agree. The reality here is the shooter was mentally ill, and we have a nation where guns are easy to access. Those are real problems that the whole nation needs to address. Even if we had police presence out the wazoo, there would have been victims in this case.

False. If the shooter did not have easy access to guns there would have been zero victims.

It is absolutely bonkers to just lay this at the feet of guns and blame “society”. This individual was intent on doing people harm. If he wasn’t a shooter he would have been a stabber. Absolute joke mindset.

It takes longer to stab people and requires more strength and energy. I hope you understand now.

A 31 year old male has plenty of strength and energy to quickly and lethally (and quietly) jab a knife into your kidney, liver or throat. I hope you understand now.

Every few years I have to take the metro with a gun down to Judiciary Square to re register it. There are no checks and the documentation clearly says that you can ride the metro with your firearm to the registration office. I suppose if I was asked by a Metro Employee or Metro Police I would simply give them my registration, which I would assume the Metro Police have access to already in some sort of database.

But you’re the person most people here want to disarm in the name of stopping crime.

That’s the fascinating part about this whole thing.

Writing 'absolute' twice and starting a paragraph with "False." don't make your statement any more valid. The number of mass shootings in the US is vastly greater than 'mass stabbings' anywhere in the world. And there are just as many angry murdurous lunatics per 100,000 population everywhere. It. IS. The. Guns.

Sorry but I’m not taking your word for it. I’m going to need a citation.

You need a citation that actual people live in other countries? Or a citation that Americans are not inherently more angry at life just by virtue of living here?

Agree. Why hasn’t shooter been identified? I’m guessing either homeless or a catch-and-release.

Isaiah Trotman, 31, of Washington, DC, was identified by investigators as the gunman, and was arrested on charges of first degree murder while armed, kidnapping while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon, police said

I don't see a record on DC Sup Ct but those do not seem like the actions of a 1st time offender. Did he recently arrive in DC from elsewhere like the guy who bashed a baby in the face with a brick on Capitol Hill?

Yes, I’m sure he was a former Peace Corps volunteer and ran an animal rescue charity UNTIL he touched a GUN! Then he was transformed into a killer. The GUN did it. It infected him with violence.

I really DO think that’s what many people here earnestly believe. It’s a mass psychosis.

It’s mass psychosis to observe that access to guns makes dangerous people more dangerous? Ok.

My man you really need to take a deep breath and hug your guns and put away your kids in a safe space

this. you have to get a certain percent of registered voters in the ward to initiate a recall process. If San Fran can recall Chesa Boudin (over his perceived leniency on crime), then Ward 6 can recall Allen

It astounds me that people claim to be long time residents but have never heard of Allen.

The taxpayer will be funding him as he grows old, fully isolated and alone in prison.
