You people are thick. The point is even though there is no crime at Asbury, people are afraid to leave to go to the movies. That is a better example of what he was referring to! OK? Lakeforest Mall was taken over by MS-13, Wheaton Mall can be dicey , and of late crime has moved into Montgomery Mall too. |
Actually, we should have non partisan elections for County and City Council. Making the County a safe, prosperous, enjoyable place to live should not be a partisan issue. |
No, but he’s the driving force behind the weakening of MoCo police, which was a model of national policing. Actually, it’s Jawando as much as anyone and the rest of the Council. But the fact that Blair and Sully got the FoP endorsement is important. Frankly, if you voted for Blair, you should be voting for Sully. |
I go to Wheaton Mall all the time, it is not "dicey" |
It's not weird to feel less threatened by crime that is not random. I would not want to live in a building where there are assaults, and I don't think it's "okay" for the residents in those buildings. Nobody wants to get caught in the middle of an assault. But it's not directly affecting me even though I live nearby. I am more concerned by burglaries and robberies. Gun violence would also be a massive concern for me which is why I am glad I do not live in DTSS right now. |
They're afraid to go to Rio or Kentlands? |
I don’t think Sully is totally up to speed on crime. But there very well may be people who are afraid to go to the Rio. A quick look at dispatched calls to the Rio at Washingtonian: Firearms violation today at noon Domestic violence on 10/24 at 5pm Assault on 10/23 at 4pm Assault on 10/11 at 10pm Suspicious person on 10/08 at 1am Bomb device found on 10/7 at 5pm Overdose on 10/7 at 10am And a bunch of traffic calls. So it’s definitely not Veterans Plaza but it could be outside an older person’s comfort level. |
Yeah other than this homicide: https://www.fox5dc.com/news/police-arrest-suspect-accused-of-killing-teenager-in-wheaton And this double homicide (using bamboo sticks from a mall's restaurant decorations): https://wtop.com/montgomery-county/2018/08/suspect-sought-in-wheaton-mall-double-homicide/ and this bleach attack: https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/westfield-wheaton-mall-assault-bleach-in-victims-eyes/ Wheaton Mall is quite safe! |
I remember the two more recent ones which as you can see occurred several months ago. By that standard Montgomery Mall is also pretty "dicey". If you want to prevent all crime in commercial areas, good luck. |
I guess every city in the US is also "dicey." What, specifically, are Sullivan's proposals to rid Montgomery County of crime, and how does he intend to work with a county council likely to be in opposition to him? |
NP here. I was going to post this, as well. Perhaps Elrich isn’t the cause of increasing crime, but he is doing literally nothing to stop it. He does not support MCPD and his task force wants to tremendously limit MCPD’s reach. It calls for fewer police in much of the county. He has cut units and positions. He has created an environment in which officers feel no respect or support from county leadership, hence the increased retirements and decreased recruitment. That’s all on Elrich and the council. And it’s the reason I support Sullivan. |
Fixed that for ya |
County Executives don't drive crime. It's how they react to surging crime that matters. Our political leadership is failing to address the problem and officer shortage. https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/02/01/montgomery-county-considering-new-recruitment-strategy-for-dwindling-police-force/ |
I was in DC today and saw a bus ad offering bonuses of $20k to join the DC Police Department. MoCo is not doing enough to recruit. |
The crime surge is fueled in part by unilateral policy decisions Elrich has taken. He is anti pretext stops for example, but thats largely how police get illegal guns off the street. He has created a hostile work environment for police, in a lot of ways, but his public comments against his very high-performing department cause a lot of damage, and police don’t do as much proactive policing. He unilaterally pulled SROs out of schools, which took away an important violence prevention tool. Police presence helps reduce violence full stop. And the violence prevention extends into the community. Nobody is asking how much student on student violence is happening outside of schools (ahem Jailyn Jones murder). Somebody ask that please. How many shootings, stabbings, murders, permanent disabilities are happening to students because of violence? Because the violence is fueled by in school fights and social media threats. Their beefs don’t end at school doors. And there has been a mass exodus of outstanding officers. They leave for jurisdictions that value them. They have lost five or six assistant chiefs under Elrich. I am not even counting Elrich’s cluster @&$& creation and rapid implosion of a civilian assistant chief. I think their captains only average about 3 years of experience at that rank. They may be awesome. I have no clue. But the lack of experience or mentorship will leave its mark. What’s going to be left is mediocrity. And who suffers the most from a failure to keep the community safe? Black and brown lower income communities. Elrich and Jawando lead that destruction and the rest of the cowardly council, who’re terrified of appearing racist, just go along with them. No ethics. No spine. No subject matter expertise. Only massive egos and self serving bull $&@&. |
