Sullivan — deliberately misleading

Anonymous
I was curious enough about Reardon Sullivan to see what he might have to offer. First up, I’m curious about how a Black Republican would explain his Party choice and positions in a way that seems positive and sane, so I went to his page. I searched for information about what he might stand for, and instead I found a series of paragraphs about Elrich, with little substance about Sullivan himself. Ok. He’s not Elrich, and that’s his platform. I had to read through several paragraphs about his Dad — “ a staunch Democrat” — before Sullivan even identified himself as a Republican. Perhaps he’s ashamed? Or being deliberately misleading?

Then, something I saw today told me all I need to know about Reardon Sullivan, his ethics, and what he’s trying to offer: A large sign with large words: Democrats for Sully. Again, no mention of his affiliation with the Republican Party. Either he’s ashamed of his political identity, he’s running as a spoiler, or he is being deliberately duplicitous, obscuring his platform with folksy stories about his Dad, and treating voters as though we’re too lackadaisical to even look for the basics before we vote.

As a voter, I jumped from being curious and cautious to seeing Sullivan as fraud.
I can imagine, possibly, voting for a Republican. I can’t imagine voting for someone who’s working hard to present himself as something other than what he actually is.

—WOC willing to give him a listen. He blew it in ways that make him seem even more duplicitous than most MoCo politicians. I guess that’s his party line.

Maybe he is ashamed or is being duplicitous. Or, maybe he knows that many Montgomery county voters won’t even consider learning about a candidate if they A Republican. So maybe he saves that information till the end so that you’ve read stance, maybe you agree with it, maybe you don’t.

Politicians who omit information exists on both sides. A current example is Dawn Luedtke who is running for the new district 7 seat. She is the wife of Eric Leudtke, current md house of representative district 14 rep. If you look on her website in her bio, this information is not disclosed. She mentions him once and only as her husband Erik. Not that he is another politician. I bring this up because when I first started seeing her name I wondered if they were related. It may or may not be a big thing but I’m just saying that omission of information, lack of disclosing information, hiding information is prevalent on both sides.

"Sully" is running around talking about how MS-13 is "taking over" the county. This is a blatant racist dog whistle intended to appeal to racist voters. He has no earthly idea what MS-13 is, where it operates and what other gangs operate in the county. He is also clearly distracting from the fact that the rise in gun violence is not just tied to overall crime increases that are happening everywhere but also to the rise of ghost guns. He DGAF about that.

It’s too bad there’s not a general agreement re: openly acknowledging relevant information and relationships. Still, for me, not indicating what party you supposedly represent in an election is a new low bar. OP

Eh. I think most of us are very aware that he is the Republican candidate. I did a quick search on Google and Facebook. It was pretty obvious, with regular references to him as the Republican candidate for county exec. I don’t see an obvious intent to hide it. How could he, anyway? Party affiliation is clearly listed in a ballot.

I find this very troubling. Now I’m wondering what his real agenda is — since these kinds of comments suggest that he has goals that might go way beyond the upcoming election . OP

If you thought the Democrats for Sully sign was bad, come to my neighborhood where there is a Democrats for Cox sign.

Can you guys cite anything about this? I feel like there’s one poster who keeps bringing up this MS-13 claim, but I don’t see where it’s coming from.

Thanks for questioning this. I’m here venting about a candidate that I know little about— in part because of his party affiliation. I don’t have any information beyond the concern that I Originally posted.

So I did find a quote where he claimed MS-13 was “taking over” Gaithersburg. Maybe that’s what the pp keeps referencing. (To be fair there has been quite a bit of reportedly MS-13 related crime in Gaithersburg).

I, of course, get that party affiliation is listed on a ballot. My goal, though, is to have a clearer sense of the candidates before I vote, since I actually am open to voting beyond one political party — for appealing candidates that I feel would represent my interests and all of their constituents well. I still find it odd, troubling, and potentially confusing that it’s not listed on his own campaign materials. Perhaps this is now the standard?

As for the “both sides” stuff, I find it less then helpful without specifics. Since I don’t plan to vote until Election Day, I still have time to do some real research.

Thanks for your comments. Since I don’t do Facebook, it’s good to get a general sense of the information that I might be overlooking.

Democrats almost completely funded Cox’s primary campaign. Why wouldn’t they support him in the general?

There's an "(R)" next to his name on the actual ballot.

Oh my goodness, just listen to him talk. He has no idea what he is talking about.
