Why does the DC Council (Charles Allen) not want the MPD doing any traffic enforcement?

There's been a million studies all showing black drivers are far more likely to be ticketed by cameras. Some cities have dropped cameras because of it.

Once again, ignoring that black pedestrians are far more likely die in traffic deaths, to be struck/killed pedestrians. Let's focus on the people dying here and how to prevent that.

Has there been a single black pedestrian who has died this year in a traffic accident? Traffic deaths are quite rare in Washington D.C.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2022/02/23/dc-traffic-deaths-highest-record/

PS that article was from Feb 2022. 25 deaths so far in 2022 but cannot say the breakdown by race a DC doesn't publish that to my knowledge. Important to note that just because someone doesn't actually die doesn't mean they weren't permanently and profoundly affected.

Your chances of dying in a traffic accident in Washington DC are roughly the same as being killed by a lighting strike.

What a useless comment.

Traffic deaths in DC are a little bit like plane crashes or being attacked by a shark. When one happens, everyone hears about it. But that doesnt change the fact that they are statistically rare. There are more than 1 million people in DC during the day. If 24 people are killed each year on D.C. rounds, that's out of hundreds of millions of trips. Statistically, that's not that different than the three people in D.C. who have been killed this year by lightning.

That's literally 8 times as much!

This is the strange thing about Vision Zero. It's aimed at something that rarely happens in the first place and because it's trying to prevent something that barely ever happens, it's highly unlikely to be successful.

I would say that the crap drivers with near misses or the actual hits that don't result in death are enough to p*ss me off enough to desire change. The folks shrugging at this probably live in the richer areas of DC

Right, like they are ok with people being severely injured? Or someone coming within inches of running over a baby in a stroller?? Frankly, whoever posted that is a psychopath.

You must not work in the safety arena, so here's a primer. If you want to reduce pinnacle events (e.g., death) then you work on preventing 2nd order events (e.g., injuries), and try to minimize 3rd order events (e.g., near misses). Track the second and third and see how your actions are moving us either closer to or farther from pinnacle events.

And yes, the mayor is just paying lip service so you don't see any of that being done.

Statistics should not just look at deaths but anyone hit even if they live, serious car accidents, etc. I drive to work daily and have two kids to drop off at school every day. It's witnessing constant horrific driving that results in near misses. It's annoying, it's concerning. A child biking in my neighborhood was slammed into on video by a driver who sped through a stop and never stopped after hitting the child. Kid was fine, so that doesn't count in the stats. I see drivers like that EVERY day on my drive to and from work. Lack of any enforcement for drivers like that makes me want to vote out the entire DC council. It also makes me want more cameras only if DC will have a better enforcement strategy to hold people accountable.

Funny how there's no safety requirements imposed on cyclists. I saw someone on an ebike the other day, with a small child in his lap. Neither was wearing helmets and they cut off a city bus. The bus had to slam on its breaks to avoid hitting them.

Probably because there's only 300 or so people in the entire city who use the bike lanes. There's a half million cars here.

The denominator on both is so massive you can round both down to zero.

When bicyclists start annoying me more than cars, Ill let you know, but my daily drive to work involves cursing daily at an average of 2-3 drivers and 0.001 cyclists. My DH bikes for exercise but we agreed he won't bike on major DC streets because of how awful the drivers are, sticks to Anacostia trail only.

Probably because there's only 300 or so people in the entire city who use the bike lanes. There's a half million cars here.

Sure so in other words, ahole drivers are the bigger concern, statistically speaning

How is this possible? Are they designed to only take a picture if the driver is black?

This. The rhetoric on this thread is so ridiculous.

Meh. No. It's a fair complaint when DC has no enforcement and most people are mad about that. You're in the privileged minority if that's not affecting you. You probably live in some quiet corner of NW where few accidents happen anyways, statistically speaking, esp when compared to what folks in Wards 7 and 8 deal with (see Post article earlier on thread for the map on where the most issues are)
