Does Scott Joftus deserve a full term?

I dont remember any BOE member has voiced their own opinion publicly about the relationship between MCPS and the Teachers union. Does he speak for BOE?

Why wouldn't he?

Exactly!

I think his opponent starts these thrads.

This thread is about an action that he is taking tomorrow. His opponent didn't set him up for this, he did this to himself.

What action is he taking tomorrow? He recuses himself from any vote relating to the Kid Museum. Just like Karla Silvestre recuses herself from any vote relating to Montgomery College.

He never has. Tomorrow's vote is on the Consent Agenda. It's all set for a unanimous vote by the full vote along with many other items. No discussion. Just one vote. That's how the Consent Agenda works.

You're incorrect. He has recused himself repeatedly. They pull the item, and everyone votes on it except him. Like for example, on June 7th:

He recused himself from voting on THIRTY ONE items in that link. That's your example? He couldn't vote on any of the 31 items because? He didn't give a reason.

Your example is that his conflict of interest prevents him from doing his job! 31 procurement contracts he couldn't vote on in one meeting. Wow.

That was a stupid enough link. No one has to invent anything when you have Board of Education members who can't function.

Doing what? What are they doing and why do you prefer to take your child to Bethesda instead of having a science teacher in your school?

Because MCPS can't afford to outfit every teacher - or even each school - with all the cool stuff the kid museum has.

And they only send very few students, so it's a win for the Bethesda kids that desperately need this type of facility in their back yard.

Joftus' wife on the Kid Museum board should have been reason enough to either not award 4 million dollars of federal covid money to kid museum, or Joftus should never have been appointed (not voted in) into Pat's vacant position. 4 million should have been enough funding for every age-eligible child in MCPS to receive an annual pass (without a discount), so where did all the money go?

People need to wake up and realize what's going on here. There is no way I will vote for any of these BOE incumbents ever again.

Does anyone know how many full time staff are employed? The range of the salary?

Of course not. It's a private company. Funded with public dollars, but you don't get to know anything how the money is spent and there's no audit. Have fun guessing.

It's a 501c3. They file publicly.

Joftus' wife got $64K in salary in 2020 (latest year I could find) to run the place. That's less than a moderately qualified teacher in MCPS gets.

And she should be paid out of MCPS Operating Budget funds INSTEAD of a teacher in a MCPS classroom because why?

MCPS pays Kid Museum for services rendered. They're a vendor.

What services? Vendor of what? Looking forward to your posting of the contract, invoices and payments.

According to this piece more than 1,650 students would have engaged with the organization in that school year. That is 1 percent of the student population of mcps. If you divide the investment (in the millions) by 1,650, it’s a huge fee per student and hard to justify when the other 158,000 students have no engagement or benefit.

This video says it was up to 7,500 students in 2021.

$756 per student. That's a reasonable fee for a field trip.

How many hours do the students spend in the building?

I get the sense that you'll be indignant no matter what he does. You don't want him to vote, and you also don't want him to recuse himself. And you seem to have started three threads about this same issue.

So much attention to a stupid, small, contract. Yes, given the size of the mcps budget, this contract is not even a drop in the bucket.

When you look at what he's done, I'm not impressed. It is the same as most of the othere: Not standing up to the mcps staff. They let them go on blathering, saying nothing, and then voting everything they say.

Not voting for the right wing disrupters, but hope one day we get some decent candidates!

The $2MM grant is about $12.50 per student across MCPS.

And? So what. All MCPS students don't go to this place. Only a few go. Your point is meaningless.

Pretty much everyone was aware once he got the job. You’re cute but you’re not helping by simply not voting people in because status quo.

Pretty much everyone? Who? After he was appointed, but not before he was appointed? Why didn't he disclose the conflict of interest in his application?

He did disclose it in his application to be on the board, and he verbally mentioned it in his interview, both of which were publicly available. He has recused himself from all votes relating to Kid Museum.

Why would you lie about this when it is so easily fact checked.

Here's Scott Joftus' application to be on the Board of Education. There is no mention of his wife or her company.

https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/C8LLTQ57A2D3/$file/Joftus%2C%20Scott.pdf

There is no public record of Joftus' interview. The public wasn't able to watch that interview. Explain again how there was "public" vetting of this secret?

Yes, the public was able to watch the interview, because I, a member of the public, watched all of them. Perhaps the links aren't up anymore, but at the time of the interviews last fall, they were made public.

There were never any links. They weren't public. There was only limited seating in the room and that filled and there was no other access.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdU08EUmGi1KyJHhQR_2k91s-swJ7d071RJ8-wAwxM9hh5KwQ/closedform

Wrong. I watched them from my laptop.

In your imagination. Where's the link you supposedly watched?

Found it: it's still posted on the MCPS live meetings page archive, under Special Programs, 2021:

You mean you posted it. The BOE calendar was clear. The meeting wasn't televised.

I do not work for MCPS. I am just a parent who watched the meeting that was linked to their web site last year, and guess what, it still is. Maybe it wasn't televised live on MCPSTV, but the recording was linked to that page that day or the next, because I watched it then.

At any rate, I encourage everyone to watch the interviews with Scott Joftus and Julie Yang, as it's a great opportunity to hear both of their responses to the board's questions.

Just wanted to try to circle back to this--it's very relevant to the upcoming BOE election. Please do take a few minutes to watch both the Joftus and Yang portions of the interviews here. https://mcpsmd.new.swagit.com/videos/148980

Joftus is at 51:45 and Yang is at 2:58:05.
