Does Scott Joftus deserve a full term?

Opinion: Why MCPS and the teachers union need to improve their relationship By Scott Joftus.

I dont remember any BOE member has voiced their own opinion publicly about the relationship between MCPS and the Teachers union. Does he speak for BOE?

Yeah he didn’t get the memo: he’s supposed to be a rubber stamp

Oh don’t worry. If you read the article he was clearly an apologist for MCPS, not an impartial observer. I think he’s a smart, decent guy, but he’s full of lofty “shoulds” and very little action.

Here is the ink to his article: https://bethesdamagazine.com/2022/08/27/opinion-why-mcps-and-the-teachers-union-need-to-improve-their-relationship/

I was wonder what did he do or not do at BOE meeting when the fraction became really bad. Did he facilitate the regular meetings for both sides? Did he advise mcps do better in communication?

Why wouldn't he?

Which actions are you saying he "should" take?

Deserve a full term? No, because he wasn't voted in by constituents of Montgomery County!

I watch how he votes at BOE meetings, both in the public portion and the behind-closed-doors votes. He almost always votes with Shebra, Brenda and Judy, who rubber stamp everything from the superintendent, while Rebecca is willing to go out on a limb for change, as was Hana, and sometimes Karla and Lynne. He says in another op-Ed for Bethesda Beat that one of the main responsibilities is holding the superintendent accountable, but in this op-Ed I feel he is blaming MCEA for all the acrimony and explaining away the mistakes of MCPS. I don’t think MCPS is the devil and this is all just my opinion. But I think his voting record, particularly the behind closed doors votes, say a lot.

He makes some good suggestions in the op-ed. I think he's right that board members could have a more direct role in the negotiation meetings, and that the board shouldn't only be listening to the reports back from MCPS staff. This would be one way for the board to provide more oversight, and could be a model for other meetings that haven't previously included board members.

Why would the board want any oversight?

OP. No.

No

Yes, he deserves a full term. I think he has a lot of knowledge and perspective about public school systems, and has a different kind of background than any of the other board members.

So where is the evidence that he has applied any of that during his time on the Board?

I voted for him in the primary but this op-ed has proven to me that I should vote for others in the general election.

I'm disappointed in his clear antipathy for our teachers and his clear desire to build his consulting business.
