The weirdest thing is seeing this described as him making “funny faces” by the media. Poor guy looks like he’s having some serious sensory overload.

Nah, it's developmentally appropriate for a 4 y/o and I have one on the spectrum. It's a reason for the "f***ing four" description of the age. His sister pushed him?! She's a little troublemaker but all middle children are. When I see all that jewelry, all I can think is death and blood.

Slander!

Yes, but the other countries with functional royals are not as significant as Britain so people don't care as much. If France or Germany had working royals, I think they'd also get this kind of attention, but they don't. People just don't care that much when the monarchies in the Netherlands or Luxembourg get up to shenanigans. Spain is the probably the closest and they don't even come close to having the reach or influence of Britain.

But yes, all monarchies preen, it's pretty much their entire job.

Can't we stop raining on the parade? 70 years at a job is worth celebrating! You don't like it? Don't comment and don't watch! If American and don't care why are you posting?

Well I mean...nothing went right. Wasn't this supposed to be a celebration of the Queen and her three heirs? Heir 3 and 4 aren't even in most of the shots...

Instead Louis' seriously unimpressed face stole the show.

Those are great pics. Louis is a (great) grandchild - he's not stealing the show, he is the show.

He was waving to all the helicopters and planes, which was cute.

I find his little tantrum endearing, especially since I'm not the one mind who minding him. The photos remind me of our one attempt at the White House Easter Egg Roll.

It wasn't a tantrum -- it was in response to noise of jets flying overhead.

Prince Louis was adorable! So much typical misinformation on this thread.

For anyone wanting to watch the full re-play of the event, including viewing the PACKED mall and stands, and see the true boisterous support for the Queen and Cambridges, you can watch Sky News replay here, featuring excellent Royal commentator Alastair Bruce (he's like Lucy Worsley, for those of you who know her work and style). Also great insights from Dame Joanna Lumley!

No ridiculous American talking heads.

No because they have 5 grandkids between them and if Anne brings hers, why were Beatrice/Eugenie and their children cut?

Only one branch of the family is important.

This is it. It just is.

Did you even watch? Edward and his two kids were on the balcony. That’s why PP asked about Anne.

Edward's kids are younger and still live at home. Anne's kids are much older and have their own families and jobs. It makes sense that Edward gets to bring his kids and Anne doesn't.

He spent most of the time frowning/upset or talking to the Queen who was twisting and interacting with him - can't be rude after all.

India and Africa, like everything else valuable that they own.

Dearie, the most valuable thing the royal family owns is real estate in both India and Africa and throughout the world. That "gold" carriage is nothing compared to the real estate cash flow.

Can’t believe in 2022 people still find any of this acceptable much less admirable.

Meh, I will find it acceptable and admirable in 2023.

All these millions of people dead from the pandemic, global wars and economic instability and here they are carrying on like it’s a 100 years ago.

Sounds like the denizens of DCUM.

Which is…exactly what the PP said.

Anonymous wrote:Any Brits on this thread who can estimate what percent of British people enjoy this stuff, versus what percent find it disgusting, versus what percent are just apathetic to it all? As an American, I'd be curious.

I find the whole idea of monarchy offensive and especially the aspect of it where the royals parade around in gold coaches and expense clothes, dripping in diamonds, on the taxpayer's dollar, but then argue it's good for the country.

And yet, as someone who is not a British subject, I also find that some part of me enjoys this stuff. I will get up early to watch the weddings, for instance. I like reading about the fashion even thought it's mostly terrible. I think the monarchy should be abolished but it's not my monarchy so I still enjoy some royal-watching and don't feel that guilty about it. They are like weird, untalented celebrities.

I also sort of love the idea of this all happening if only because Prince Andrew has been barred from participating in any of it and I'm certain it is destroying him from the inside out. Which is probably a more tortuous punishment for his grossness than most other things you could come up with. So I'm sort of pro-Jubilee primarily to stick it to Prince Andrew, I guess. Not super cost effective, I guess.

I am from Northern Ireland but was raised between Cornwell and London. The Irish in the small village where I was born and where my grandparents still live pretty much hate the royals. I went to British schools and they were just a routine part of live. Some of the girls in my secondary school in London were minor British royals but we only knew it because they would occasionally appear with their parents at a royal do. Many people think only older people like royalty, but it is mostly a lower class thing like in the US with people who follow celebrities like the Kardashians. They really don't pay much in taxes and it is like a fantasy land for them. The upper classes put up with it but most of them have figured out ways to shelter their money.

Standing on the balcony like that had to be exhausting. They should have had an elevated chair for her. She's the Queen. No one would mind if she were on a "throne" on the balcony instead of standing.

She did look like she was genuinely enjoying herself, though.
