Same. I don't know anyone like this, and I'm glad I don't. How do people get through life? |
It's crazy to me how many people don't know that this is a problem! |
You’d notice if she was slurping her fingers then serving you salad she just chopped with those same paws. |

Our overly sterilized world is considered to be a possible source of auto immune disease in our populations. If you are reasonably healthy and have a decent immune system, you will be fine eating food prepare by your MIL’s less than sterile hands. You probably don’t realize that even if you wash your hands before prepping food, it is unlikely you have removed every microbe. You’ve likely seen the way surgeons scrub prior to gloving up for surgery, and I doubt very much you clean yourself like that before handling food. Humans are constantly consuming microbes and we have billions of microbes living in our bodies which are critical to our health. Exposure to environmental microbes strengthens immunity and health in most people.
Your MIL’s cooking sustained your husband and any siblings he has all the way to adulthood. He probably has no issue with his mother’s sanitary habits but agrees with you because it would be unpleasant for him if he didn’t. This is your germ phobia and you should not inflict it on anyone else. Get therapy. Prep your own food and do it in a way as to hurt your MIL’s feelings as little as possible. |
I don’t think it’s really that big of a problem. |
Oh PLEASE. Most people I know realize all of what you just said and would still be supremely grossed out to see someone lick their fingers and then grab a pastry from a box, put it on a plate, and hand it to them. Come on. This is what you’re defending? That when you have guests over you should feel free to handle raw meat, then turn around and hand them a glass from the cupboard and expect them to fill it with water and drink without a peep of protest? This is what you are defending: that it is OK not to wash your hands after you go to the bathroom? This is the flag you’re choosing to fly? |
A problem for whom? Presumably if people are getting sick they'd realize it's a problem...but if they aren't getting sick...is it a problem? |
Ask your area’s health inspector if the only concern regarding kitchen safety is “did someone get sick.” Ask the same of the scrub nurses in the OR. “Did someone get sick and if not, it’s fine” is…not really a guiding principal for health and safety. |
In other words, you are NASTY! |
| Oh my, I've found my people. I cook. In fact, I do all the cooking and everything because my inlaws are the kind of people who take the dog for a walk, (pick up poop, wipe the dirty paws with a towel), then come in side, grab the kleenex from the pocket, do the blow/pick thing with the kleenex, stuff it back into their pocket, then walk over to grab a grape/water bottle/cheese from my daughter's plate to give to her. If you think I'm making any of that up or being hysterical, they do it ALL THE TIME. We finally had a come to jesus discussion and they got better at times but we have to continually remind them. It's so fu$%$ing frustrating having to feel like the handwashing police, but it is so disgusting. |
Lol have you ever worked in a kitchen? If you think the worst thing that happens in kitchens is someone not washing their hands right after handling chicken you should never eat at a restaurant, a visit from the health inspector once a year notwithstanding. |
It’s not. Some people just go looking for problems. |
This is so true. One of my first jobs was as a waitron in a very nice fairly expensive restaurant. I used to wonder a lot what they diners would think if they saw the fresh catch of the day fish laying on pans in the walk-in and getting stepped on (just on the scales - no biggie!) by kitchen staff all day, or the buckets of scrambled egg mix sitting open in the walk in, or any of the other food handling practices that were pretty nasty. The walk-in and kitchen inspections at the start of Kitchen Nightmares episodes never surprises me because I worked in the restaurant industry for years and I’ve seen it all from greasy spoon to 5 star restaurants. And I’ll reiterate what I previously posted - we have billions of microbes in our bodies and we actually suffer when those populations weaken or die off. People with seriously debilitating gastrointestinal illnesses like IBS, diverticulitis and Crohn’s are being successfully treated by having feces transplants from healthy people. Studies have established that children raised in homes with dogs that go outside and come inside covered in environmental microbes are healthier because they’re ingesting those microbes after petting and hugging their dogs. Children who go to daycare typically have healthier immune systems because they’re exposed to many more microbes in early childhood. Children who eat dirt are typically healthier than children whose mothers hover over them with antibacterial soap wipes and hand sanitizer 24/7. All of you stuck up ladies are chock full of gross microbes. Nothing you can do about it, learn to relax a little. |
Oh look MIL is here. |
