It's kind of obvious when sharing close quarters and you hear a flush and the door opens immediately.

Some people wash their hands, and *then* flush.

WE KNOW YOU AREN'T WASHING YOUR HANDS. IT IS OBVIOUS.

My MIL has actually critized my housekeeping, mostly when I had two very little kids, and a full-time job, and absolutely no help. So sometimes, it was clutttered. And when we had them over, I used clean, but wrinkled napkins (she actually said, I know you can't afford a full-time housekeeper, but what about having someone come in once a week to iron your linens? I'm not kidding!). Anyway, she is so critical, and her house is actually kept quite clean because she has many housekeepers, etc. However, her food hygiene is gross. No hand washing throughout cooking, including licking her fingers and blowing her nose (not that she cooks that often, only when we are out there for a special occasion). She has this thing where she puts small bunches of grapes in a bowl of cold water and we are all supposed to pick out what we want throughout lunch. So, my gross FIL, who has been eating a sandwich and chips will then stick his fingers in the bowl of water with grapes floating in it, then we're all expected to do the same. Everytime, she pushes the grapes on me and I just say, no thanks. It's like one step removed from bobbing from apples. But I'm the bad housekeeper.

This would gross me out too OP. Thankfully I've seen my MIL cook hundreds of times and she's so good about cleanliness.

That's beyond foul and disgusting. I would never stay at their house or eat any food they prepared, nor allow my children to do either.

Anonymous wrote:I struggle with this, too, OP (and a giant eye roll to people who don't understand a little hyperbole - I'm sure they SOMETIMES wash their hands but not as often, or in as many circumstances, as you do or would like them to do). My husband learned his hygiene from his parents and so - yeah. Anyway.

I mostly just try to put it out of my head because otherwise I am going to be disgusted and rude, and ruin everyone's good time including my own. I trust the magic of stomach acid to do its job - or at least that's how I talk myself down from my disgust spiral.

I really love my in laws - and obviously my spouse - and so I try as much as I possibly can not to make this an issue. Except to myself

On the other hand I let my cats drink out of my water glasses, and I can't imagine my in laws enjoy watching that - so we all have our accomodations.

Omg. This is disgusting. Figures that yours is the only “advice” OP liked. Yes, OP, please carry on letting animals eat/drink from the same vessels as you, but judge your MIL for not washing her hands as much as you want her to. Just gross.

my in-laws don't wash their hands in the bathroom. I suspected it and then tested it out by making a small black dot on their hand soap dispenser in their bathroom. Sure enough, next time I went over there (A MONTH LATER) the soap only went down like a centimeter. gross!

Picky is washing your hands before eating or preparing food?!

Last time I was at my MIL's house she cooked ground beef at 7am on the stove and left it there all day (turned off) and tried to serve it to us for diner. NO thank you, literally haven't been back since.

How do you know it hadn’t been used up and refilled?

PP who wrote the essay about “marking the program here.” Believe me, I tried this. MIL was good for a day or two before going to old ways. FIL basically told DH and I that God made dirt and dirt don’t hurt, and still licks his hands all the darn time. So I do what I need to do to feed myself and my kids, I have no expectations of cleanliness from my ILs, and when FIL “insists” on putting my bagel in the toaster and will not leave my food alone even when directly asked to do so, I go get a granola bar and eat it in front of him.

Oh god, not you again.

You are NASTY AF!
