Overrated Music Artists That I just don't get...

Artists that I really don’t get include Lizzo, Ariana Grande, John Mayer, any and all k-pop.

But I realize that the music business doesn’t necessarily target 40-something women as evidenced by the fact that the music I like is deemed classic rock now.

I get why John Mayer grates on people, but he is an incredible guitar player and a phenomenal songwriter.

LOL

Are you a musician? I am, and I think he’s pretty brilliant. Some of his chords and chord changes are really genius. He’s one of the best guitarists of my generation.

PP hasn't heard anything other than radio play songs.

What don't you like about her?

Her music.

I'm coming to this thread a little late, and perhaps it's been commented on already, but brilliant response. Biggest laugh I had all day. Thank you.

Agree. Completely underrated musician, by mainstream listener standards, anway. I think the music business knows, hence his collaborations with Eric Clapton and Bob Weir, among others. Love his music. All day any day.

I think a lot of her music is best appreciated by Black people. I didn’t get it until I saw a Black woman analyzing it and I was like, oh, that makes sense.

+1

I'm a black woman. I can't stand her, but I am DEFINITELY IN THE MINORITY!

I'd have to say Justin Timberlake, a lot of the bro country guys, and Drake.

Drake's singing/rapping is vocal diarrhea.

Don't say that out loud! My son thinks that Drake is the GOAT!

Anonymous wrote:Kanye West - He is awful, I don't get why his music is so popular. His music sucks. He is a weirdo and the opposite of a genius. There I said it.

I loathe to say this….because I really don’t like Kanye West as a person and he appears to be a straight up a$$hole in ever sense of the word, but creativity he really is a genius. Have you listened to his non radio play music? Right now I’m listening to The College Drop out of constant repeat. Spaceship is fire.

NP: Who he is as a person is SO much louder than who he is as an artist to the point that all I hear about him is how mentally unhinged he is and that he needs medication. And that part is so abhorrent that I have no interest in seeking out his music, or anything else to do with him. (Secondarily to his personality I have seen some of his fashion and have always found each piece ugly.)

Another NP here. I think he is talented but this is totally fair. I feel the same way about everybody who have done terrible things. Like, you’ll never hear me say that Louis CK is a great comedian. His crimes are too loud for me to hear anything else he says.

Her voice is not great. She's not a dancer (and actually moves in some pretty awkward ways on stage). She's not a songwriter.

She seems sweet, and her concerts seem like they are probably amazing spectacles, but she writes terrible songs.

A lot of people mentioned here aren't my cup of tea (I am using that phrase so you will know how incredibly old I am), but it seems more likely to me that they are talented and also not my thing. It's weird that people are assuming that millions of fans are wrong and they're the only one with real taste.

Agreed. Like, I wouldn’t listen to Jimmy Hendrix because that kind of music isn’t my thing, but I’m not going to say I don’t get his appeal.

As a singer, yes he's terrible. But he's pretty talented as a songwriter.

I feel the same about The Beatles. None of their voices are interesting to me. But lots of the songs are great.

You think his singing is terrible? I like his voice. The gravely/interesting thing does it for me. Even if he doesn’t have a big range or whatever.

Signed,

Somebody who doesn’t listen to a lot of Dylan and knows very little about music.

Anonymous wrote:Taylor Swift. The songs are fine, some very catchy, and I get why many girls and young women feel they identify with her via the songs. But the treatment of her as a songwriting genius and performer for the ages...is far out of proportion to the actual content of her songs and albums. Not every solid singer/songwriter also has to be held up as some kind of genius.

I used to think this.... But during the pandemic, her albums Evermore and Folklore really hit me perfectly. Now I'm addicted. It's a little more folk/country, but not really pop. If you like Tori Amos, etc I think you might like these albums too.

I mean, if you like post-2000 Tori you might like anything. Otherwise, please don't compare pre-2000 Tori to Taylor Swift ever again. Sacrilege

🤣 Savage but true!

+1 Tori Amos is nothing like Taylor Swift. Tori’s music is powerful and has way deeper meaning than Taylor’s bubble gum pop sh#t

I'm telling you, these two albums (Evermore and Folklore) are really very Tori (Boys for Pele vibe): piano, lyric-wise, mood, etc.

+2 Her music makes my blood pressure go up. I don't know why but I can't stand it.

For me, it's her breathy sound.

Celine Dion.
I know I am in the minority but she is just screechy and strange to me.
The Titanic song seemed like an snl parody.
