Bethany Mandel

I see from her twitter profile she's a "contributing writer" for Deseret News, which is paper based in Utah owned by Church of Latter Day Saints. According to wikipedia"the paper's name is derived from the word for "honeybee" in the Book of Mormon". How does someone like her end up contributing articles to some right wing Mormon paper based out of Utah?

Because I was curious about why she had a thread I googled her and this article came up:
https://www.timesofisrael.com/conservative-influencer-bethany-mandel-says-you-can-call-her-a-grandma-killer/

She was raised by a Catholic mother, decided to embrace Judaism once she got to university, and converted to Orthodox judaism when she met her husband.

As a Jew myself, I'm always fascinated by people like her - converts who become strident and judgmental voices.

Anyway, read that Times of Israel article I linked to. It's a conservative outlet but what's funny is the article is supposed to by one of the soft touch promotional articles that paper is known for - but for anyone outside its right wing audience she comes off like a moron.

The other night, in a rant about NYC reopening, Bethany referred to herself as “NYC born and bred.” This article says she was raised upstate. Wtf.

I assume because she's a right wing pundit? Listen, the majority of newspapers in this country lean left. They just do. And if you want to be a conservative columnist for a liberal newspaper, you have to be smart. Bethany isn't exactly George Will or Marc Theissen, so the Washington Post won't be calling any time soon. Jennifer Rubin already has the performative-outrage-cafeteria-conservative market cornered, so they don't even need her for the entertainment value.

Just googled her and she did a super cringe AMA on reddit where, like here, all her twitter lackies came to blow smoke up her ass.

This thread seems petty and mean-spirited. I enjoy reading Bethany on Twitter and find her to be very intelligent, a quick study, a clear, articulate writer, and she has a really good sense of humor. Along with these attributes, she's happily married to an intelligent, very nice, handsome man who is a devoted husband and father, and she's an involved mother who enjoys motherhood. And, she's very pretty. Maybe that's too much for some people to handle.

(And, of course, I'm not her. I just hate to see people gratuitously attacking kind people.)

Agree with all this, but TOI is NOT a conservative outlet. It is generally pretty moderate and purposefully houses blogs (like hers_ with right and left viewpoints.

+1. Not to mention most of what the PP said is just false, and the rest aren't attributes to brag about. Bethany is extremely mean-spirited on twitter. She mocks anyone with different views from her or who she thinks is not living the "right" way. She has endless vitriol for teachers, of all people. She thinks she's smarter than everyone else and makes that very clear. The PP was obviously written by her or one of her friends.

Speaking of her friends, on instagram the other day she was bemoaning the fact that other parents exclude her kids because of "her politics" and that this is a pattern that happens everywhere she lives. Bethany, since you are clearly reading here, it's not your politics - it's just you!

My dh is hotter than Seth. Guess I'm just better than Bethany since you seem to think looks are everything.

It's pretty clear that she's overcompensating and hasn't resolved the trauma from her tumultuous teenage years.

I get it - she wants the stability and companionship for her kids that she never had. But this abrasive, know-it-all Twitter persona is not the way to do it. Her kids are going to read all these Tweets one day and its going to hit them like a ton of bricks.

It's "sarcasm" according to her friends who defended her on here last time there was a thread about her. Not sure they know what sarcasm is, but it usually has a humorous component.

Exactly! Bethany and I have a lot of the same views on covid - get vaccinated, get your kids vaccinated, and then treat covid as endemic. The only area in which we disagree is that Bethany thinks vaccine mandates are racist (???) and I think that they are fine. If Black people don't want to be excluded from "every restaurant in Manhattan" as Bethany claims, they can be vaccinated. Nevertheless. I still wear my mask and mask my kid indoors in DC because that's the law in DC. Bethany is the type to claim you're abusing your child if you're just following the law.

And of course typing this, I just remembered that as of today it's not the law in DC so thanks, Bethany, for reminding me

Is she considered pretty?
I googled her ( had never heard of her before this). She seems rather unremarkable. Not ugly by any means, but nothing of note.
Which is perfectly fine. Her looks shouldn’t be of consequence. At least not in this forum. It’s just weird to specifically comment on her looks.
I wouldn’t think that has played a part in whatever success she’s enjoyed. Which is probably good. She wants people to listen to her. It shouldn’t be about looks.
Of course now that I’ve listened to her…. Not much there either.

Please don’t take the bait on discussing her looks. PP is probably Bethany intentionally bringing that up to make that the subject so she can cry victim again. No one is here to bash her looks or talk about her kids. Just to take issue with the vile opinions she makes a living hawking.

Agreed. Bethany and Seth are fine looking. I find her dreadfully annoying on twitter but she does have a cute face.

She just doesn’t seem to have anything new to say. There isn’t any depth or nuance. I’m just a little puzzled by how she has an amplified voice.
I don’t spend any time on Twitter, so I guess that’s part of the problem.
