Bethany Mandel

I started following her in earnest at the beginning of the Trump admin cause she seemed like a somewhat sane Republican and I thought maybe her perspective would be helpful. After following for many years I think she may actually be one of the most unhinged voices on the right. It seems like her brand is just performative outrage. The "articles" she writes for various fourth tier publications are a joke and the stuff she posts on twitter ranges from plain stupid to completely unhinged. But she's treated in certain circles like some kind of thought leader. I'm just kind of baffled by her overall. Can anyone explain what her deal is?

Literally never heard of this person.

Interesting bio by the Deseret:

Basically, they are part of DC's booming Conservative Inc. Foot soldiers who don't mention that their bread is buttered by conservative billionaires. Her husband is editor of Washington Examiner Magazine.

Yes she and her husband are masquerading as reasonable but they actually strike me as smug, self serving, and very far right.

They both used to seem like they were play-acting at having lost their minds, but now I think they have legitimately lost their minds.

She used to go to my pool. I don't like the insult "Karen" but that's probably the easiest way to describe her. Entitled, pushy, obnoxious, thought rules didn't apply to her. She would bring 4(?) badly behaved kids, stare at her phone nonstop and get really pissed that other people weren't babysitting for her. Someone pointed me to her online presences after she made an ass of herself on the listserv. I don't follow her but I'm not surprised by your description.

She was threatening divorce on her public professional Twitter account.

Need I say more?

Read the Deseret article above. Pretty easy to read between the lines that she still has a lot of unresolved trauma from her teenage years. Hence the oodles of kids and her promotion of Big Family as the "right way" for women to live.

People who speaking in certainties are scary.

I forget the specifics but she was extremely mad that the lifeguards weren't there specifically to personally supervise her very small child who didn't know how to swim. Management politely told her via personal email that parents have the primary responsibility for supervising their kids and that there's some kind of rule about how many young children a single adult is supposed to bring. She posted the email on the listserv with a rant about how management didn't care if everyone's kids drowned, I think expecting people to come to her defense. She lost it after a couple people chimed in to say they agreed with management. She started threatening people and suggesting she had some kind of connection with the county and would get the pool shut down. I think she also vaguely threatened to hurt some people's careers?

Like I said I forget the specifics but I very clearly remember the hissy fit. I'll check with my friends, I'm sure someone has the emails still. Anyway she was asked not to come back which is clearly for the best but I do slightly miss the drama. It was a very funny week.

She was one of the people absolutely screeching online about shutdowns, masks, etc. I think Alexandra Petri even made fun of her in a column about the zoo being closed.

I remember her being super upset that she couldn't go to restaurants - and I was like, you have FOUR little kids. When are you going to a restaurant?

She's a total wackadoodle, but entertaining.

I first became aware of her when she posted this and became a highlight of Twitter for a day or so. Everyone was like
a) wow, your kids are disgusting if that’s what their masks look like or
b) duh, look at all those disgusting germs your kids’ masks kept away from other people or
c) that’s completely fake, cry more about masks

What is wrong with us? When did it become okay to start a thread solely to trash someone you don't like and also gleefully participate in the bashing? Would you like it if your child was cyberbullied? Because I'm not seeing how this is different.

Have you considered even once just keeping someone’s children out of your hateful posts?

Oh wow, she’s joined the thread. Awkward.
