Can I ask why? I went to NU and it's in Evanston, not Chicago. Evanston is a suburb. Sure you can take the El down easily into Chicago but you don't have to if you don't want to.

It's an annoying hike if you live on a coast. Frequent complaint from both NU and UChicago families who don't live in the Midwest. And Notre Dame has football to fly in for ... a college like Boulder has gorgeous mountains ... if you're from a major coastal city, what's a draw about metro Chicago? Not much. Go watch the Northwestern football team get clobbered?

The only draw is that they can't get into better schools, duh. But somehow they always needed to frame it in a way that doesn't sound overly embarrassing, like "oh I picked Chicago because of the academics" or "DS picked Northwestern because he really loved the coastline or the journalism/music/biomed program." That's how things were 9 out 10 times.

Again, you sound really sad and bitter, and none of what you say actually reflects reality. Where did you go to school?

I went to an HYPSM, duh. All other schools are inferior in either outcomes or reputation. We are legion and you are not.

Hahahahahahaha

From the Northeast and I considered schools in Northeast, Chicago, and West Coast. But not anywhere in the sh1thole south, including DC.

They have, what, a $12 billion endowment?

Why does Northwestern need this money?

The money should go to colleges that need it, not Northwestern, which is loaded with money and stingy with FA.

At least Mike Bloomberg gave his huge 1.2 billion gift to Johns Hopkins soley and completely for financial aid. That's a worthy gift, not renovating a football field. Geeze. The rich are disgusting.

Net price calculator results sure were off for us. We couldn't swing the annual costs with our youngest headed to college two years from now.

Could very well be the case. University tuition costs in America are insane, I agree. Wishing all the best for your youngest.

I just did the NPC for Boston University. They wouldn't give us aid, and the COA is $79K per year!! For Boston University!! That was a safety in my day.

College costs are completely ridiculous. Someone needs to lead the way and cut the price to a realistic level, say $40 or $50K per year, at most. College costs have far outrun inflation in recent years. All those college loans and their huge marketing apparatus made it possible, loading down families and kids with college debt.

Northwestern needs to spend the $480 million to cut it's tuition. That would be a good thing to do with that money.

Most of the gift to Northwestern is going toward research, including several areas of medical research. And a portion of it is earmarked for the football field, yes.

Only 4% of overall campaign (0% of this donation) go towards undergrad scholarships.

Agreed! I'm biased as an NU alum, but I love, LOVE Chicagoland. I grew up in MoCo and settled here, but I would happily live in Chicago or nearby. It's a fantastic city. I'll take Chicago winters over DC summers any day.

And people who think it's a pain to get to--what? ORD is one of the busiest airports in the country. My parents always raved about what an easy trip it was.

No one not involved with NW cares about this school.

The 2 weeks each year in Chicago where the weather isn't 20 below zero or 100 humid degrees with no breeze are indeed wonderful, and would be even better if you could go outside without getting shot. DC isn't perfect by any means but at least it's close to the coast and has a booming job market, along with some mix of culture. Chicago is a slightly upgraded St. Louis.

^The salty butthurt Jan returns! Welcome back. Hope your Thursday’s going alright. Have you thought of getting any help for your issues?

Northwestern is "stingy" with financial aid, huh? Sounds like something a six-figure UMC miser would say. Because Northwestern costs literally $0 for any student with genuine need.

If it’s so great, why is everyone leaving?

+1. I wonder the same thing. Why are people leaving Chiraq if it's really that great as the boosters claimed? Why are businesses fleeing the city in droves? I wonder how many of you parents actually are from Chicago, or have lived there for an extended period of time. If you're just there for once a year, maybe it's a great place to visit, but living wise, not so much.

Also, there are very few NW or UChicago grads who stay in the city. Most of them go to the coasts.
