BREAKING: Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.) gets a $480 million gift from the Ryan Family

Both Pat and Shirley Ryan went to Northwestern and met there, and apparently love the school very much. They're also wildly wealthy, and it's good ol' alma mater. What's there to be surprised about?

His kids apparently don't see Northwestern as desirable as those three East Coast schools, as do many of Northwestern's most generous donors, like the Pritzkers.

Faulty logic. Do all kids go to their parents' schools? That's neither here nor there. Also, several Pritzkers went through Northwestern, so you seem to have gotten your facts mixed up.

Also, Notre Dame is not on the East Coast. You seem challenged in more ways than one.

Only one did for her undergrad - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pritzker_family

So much for "loyalty" to their alma maters lol. NW just doesn't have the same level of pull as the eastern schools. More Pritzkers went to Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, and Dartmouth.

Who cares? It's not like it'll make a big difference in rankings. JHU got $2 billion from Bloomberg and barely moved up one spot and most people still don't see it as "elite" or a T10 school.

My God, you are desperate and totally obsessed. Jan, get offline and go do touch some grass.

Multiple Pritzkers went to Northwestern for either undergrad or law school, which also happens to be where they've donated the most. Arguably the two most notable "Pritzkers" of late, Jay and JB Pritzker, both have degrees from Northwestern.

Two of the Ryans' kids have double degrees from the law and business schools.

The PP upthread doesn't have his/her facts right. And in any case, their line of thinking is flawed and doesn't have any weight. Also, it's strange that they would do so much research into the alumni of a school that they deem irrelevant. Seems more like the behavior of a spurned ex than anything else.

The fact that it's spelled in all caps makes the OP look desperate for attention. Not surprising since Northwestern is full of those media types.

Why are there so many people in this thread acting like jilted lovers?

Wasn't there a UVA booster a while back on here that point-blank admitted that she hated on Northwestern because she ultimately couldn't afford sending her kid there, and instead sent her kid to UVA (which shouldn't even something to be sad about!)? Is that what this is all about?

I don't ever see any Harvard, Stanford, or Columbia alums making a big kerfuffle on this forum when someone made a multi-million dollar donation to their alma mater...

Except for Northwestern folks desperate for some attention... do you really need to start a new post to announce this to the entire DCUM community?

PP, this post might have triggered either 1) the HYPSM prestige defense squad or 2) the Northwestern/Uchicago hating squad of DCUM

Not the OP, but how do you even know that the person who shared this news is a Northwestern alum?

Secondly, you are so desperate to prove that Northwestern is not at the level of HYPSM (which, again, seems like a strange mission to be on since no one has ever claimed that), so yes, a donation of that magnitude is more noteworthy than it would be at a Harvard or a Stanford. I recall there being a big kerfuffle for similar donations at places like UChicago and Johns Hopkins.

This just reeks of desperation from attention-seeking alums of a second-tier university.

Ah, yes, the classic ad hominem because you aren't able to refute anything I said. Lol OK. Have a good one!
