Neighbor put huge dumpster in front of my house with no warning

Anonymous
I came home today to find that my next door neighbor has had a very large dumpster placed smack in front of my house (a DC row house) for the next month. Not his house. But mine. He explained that he needed to leave the space in front of his house clear to get debris to the dumpster (which makes no sense to me). This without any advance warning. I know it’s public property and he got a permit but I’m ticked off all the same. Should I be? Seems rude and inconsideration to not even mention it in advance. Or should I be fine be with it?

i'd be annoyed and checking in with him weekly to make sure the project stays on schedule. I might also call the dumpster company to see if there's a way to have it moved. I'd tell him straight up it would have been nice to have a warning.

It’s 100% rude to not give you a heads up. And his excuse makes no sense as that means he’d be dragging things through your property. But if it’s a public street and it’s legally permitted, I think you have to suck it up.

Do you have a car? I would start parking in front of his house.

This is what I'd do, especially with kids.

Call the permitting office and see if it can be placed anywhere or a specific place. Also call the company and tell them to move it. I'd park in front of their house and make it as difficult as you can to access the dumpster.

if it is a clunker of a car I'd push the dumpster in front of his house. it should have wheels.

That’s mature. Be neighborly. It’s a month.

He has a permit. You live in a street with rowhouses. GTOY

He was required to put the permit up 48 hours before the dumpster. DC requires you to provide evidence that you put the permit notice up. Tell him he needs to move the dumpster since there was no prior notice. Make a stink about it.

He did post signs in advance but they stretched across four houses. I assumed this was because the truck or whatever bringing the dumpster needed a lot of space. Did not realize it meant they would put it in front of my house.

Do you have a car that you would normally be parking there? If so, make sure you park it right in front of his house about 5 minutes before the workers are supposed to show up.

Wow. Your neighbor sounds like the worst. Sorry, OP.
