Rates could help push money back into the market and juice spending a bit but the problem is that changes to rates are not going to be as impactful as they were in the last recession which was based on the economics of a housing crash and a liquidity crisis. They can certainly prevent a liquidity crisis this year but it’s doubtful they can do much else about any possible recession not caused by economics.

Neat article on the detective work involved in Seattle. Really explains the genomic makeup of the virus mutations and how they track them.

Every city should be. Imagine this thing roaming through slams of Rio....

In RI, one of the people who is a presumptive case was serving food at a soup kitchen in the days before diagnosis.

I am so upset right now, my neighbor told me yesterday that she is 100% sure she has the corona-virus, and "it's no big deal, it feels just like the flu".

My thoughts:

1. she doesn't not have the coronavirus, she obviously has the flu, because she was so proud she didn't get a flu shot, she is anti-vaccine.

2. if she was correct that she really had the coronavirus, why is she hanging out outside? why is she going to work? why doesn't she tell her doctor?

3. Coronavirus is clearly not "just like the flu".

When the people in positions of power and authority are telling you not to panic and that the media is wrong, many people believe them. We have a long history of trusting our leaders. It could be argued that this assumption should be re-examined, but it isn't going to happen overnight. It's hard to say what will happen when people begin dying in the 1,000s, which I believe will happen since we've taken just about zero mitigation measures and the only Federal response so far has been to tell people not to panic and ask the Fed Reserve to cut interest rates.

She sounds a little nutty. If she knows so much to be able to self diagnose, she should know it is a big deal for 20% of the people that get it. So she should be isolating if she is 100% sure.

This is the most interesting thing I’ve read about the virus, thank you for posting!

Sounds like the critical thinking of an anti-vaxxer.

Info on second case in NYC - it appears to be a community-acquired case because has no travel risk factors.

50-year attorney who lives in Westchester Co and works in Manhattan. Has an "underlying respiratory illness" and is hospitalized in NYC.

OMG. Of all of the things to focus on FIRST, Trump is dropping the interest rate? How about our medical infrastructure? Test kits? Teams for contact tracing? Anything?!?

WTF?

My guess is he takes the Metro-North daily in from Westchester to Manhattan and works in a huge building so he's had thousands and thousands of contacts.

Agreed on most of your points, BUT! I also don not to lose all my money! We can't let the stock market tank, 401Ks are tied up in the stock market, we don't want people to suffer from the coronavirus AND lose retirement money, right?

Riddle me this... Who had more cases first? Who has more now..
Singapore 108
South Korea 4812

Who has cold weather and where is hot now?

Singapores response to the virus has been hard hitting, implemented early and thoroughly. Far different from any other country. You cannot say all the reason for less spread in Singapore was due to temperature.

https://fortune.com/2020/02/28/singapore-coronavirus-contained-response/

The answer is maybe, and perhaps only with the unique combination of factors that Singapore brings: a top-notch health system, draconian tracing and containment measures, and a small population that’s largely accepting of government’s expansive orders. Few other countries battling an outbreak that’s now infected more than 83,000 globally and killed over 2,800, can replicate these circumstances.

Singapore was aggressive out of the gate and has continued to be. It was one of the first countries to impose restrictions on anyone with recent travel history to China and parts of South Korea. It has a strict hospital and home quarantine regimen for potentially infected patients and is extensively tracing anyone they may have been in contact with.

It’s charging a couple who gave false information on their travel history and taking away residency status from a person who breached his quarantine, among other punitive actions.

Singapore “will not hesitate to take strong action” against rule breakers, Law Minister K. Shanmugam said in a statement Thursday. “The deliberate breaking of the rules, in the current situation, calls for swift and decisive response.”

Singapore also closed down things like religious services etc.
