UVA student missing

The police chief kept it together tonight. Someone told him to tone it down. Thank god!

Isn't the protocol that the friendly detectives offer the guy a can of Coke at the first meeting and then have the can tested? They might also be able to take his toothbrush if they got a pretty broad search warrant.

Pp, were you not aware that all black men are drug dealers?

I am not aware that all black men are drug dealers. However, I am aware that there are a lot of paranoid idiots out there. If JM is cleared in this case, I hope he subpoenas and sues all you idiots for slander.

Good lord people, some of you are like some phony infomercial detective straight from a Simpson's episode.

Remember Richard Jewel and the Atlanta Olympic bombings? He was there but then became a suspect. Eventually cleared.

If this guy has nothing to hide, why did he flee Charlottesville at high speed?

I wish I could agree but I can't. The police chief is way too emotional with his language and demeanor during every press conference.

Never seen a policeman in media appearances so emotional to a point one wonders as to his objectivity.

They probably already have DNA samples from his apartment (toothbrush and comb) but just need chain of custody evidence from him.

And you wonder why the last five girls who are missing are unsolved. Scary!

I suspect that they took his white pants/shirt that he wore in the video and tested them for evidence of semen and HG's DNA. If any of her DNA is on his clothes, it would support the charge of abduction with intent to defile. They can't charge rape b/c they don't know if she refused any sexual advances. They know she isn't where she intended to be b/c all evidence is that she intended to be in school. So, I suspect the clothes and/or the car have some of HG's biological evidence on them.

feeling so sorry for HG's parents (and for HG). I would really love for the evidence to show that JM is innocent and HG is trapped somewhere or died of alcohol poisoning. But, it's not looking good.

He could come up with a story where she willingly left with him and made out and had sex with him. Might come down to physical evidence on her body but he could also say it was consensual rough sex and he accidentally strangled her. I think that is what the Preppy Boy murderer said about his victim.

I've become a little obsessed with this case. I really hope she is out there somewhere alive.

Would they have her DNA by now to have discovered it on his clothes?

Matthew is not acting like an innocent person, but I don't understand why, if he was involved in her disappearance or death at all, he would voluntarily go to the police, talk to a lawyer, and leave. You'd think he would either run for the hills or turn himself in. What he actually did do makes no sense.

My gut tells me this may be like the girl who died in McLean last year -- I think he did take her intending to have sex with her, how much she protested who knows, in her state, and maybe something went wrong (drug overdose perhaps?), and he dumped the body.

Anonymous wrote:I have no idea which, if any, of the men discussed so far are guilty of anything, but I will say this:

It was really eye-opening to get a bird's-eye view of how not one but two men zeroed in on Hannah so quickly, and that was just in the span of about one minute on this one particular block of restaurants. "Good samaritan" or not, Guy #1 hid in a doorway to get behind her, and Guy #2 did a total about-face after spotting her, and actually had the brass to physically wrap his arm around her even though they were strangers to each other. I can't help wondering if he just beat Guy #1 to the punch by being bolder and latching right on. Scary s--t. That footage should be required viewing for college freshmen at Orientation. "This is who lies in wait; this is what a sitting duck you are; this is how easy it is for these men to hone in on you when you are so obviously in a vulnerable state."

Of course, it's also possible that Guy #1 really was well-intentioned, and/or that Guy #2 (JM) is innocent, and saw Guy #1 lurking in the doorway and thought he'd help Hannah out by swooping in and pretending they were pals to get Guy #1 to scram. We just don't know. Fleeing town obviously isn't a great strategy if you're innocent, but I'm withholding judgment. Still and all, seeing those guys on tape zeroing on Hannah was pretty scary.

It's just like on one of those Nature programs where the predators follow and swoop down on the disoriented young one who has been separated from the herd.

If she willingly got into the car then is it abduction? How do they know his intentions?

Where is she?!

I hope they find JM SOON.

here we go with the race discussion. Missing people always get media attention regardless of race - Relisha Rudd was constantly on the news.

She was an anomaly. The news pays a well-documented disproportionate amount of attention to missing white girls.

I guess what makes this instance sexy are the hints that a serial killer is loose. But no one has actually SAID that, right?

There's even a tabloid TV phrase, "white girl missing." which can drive cable news for some time. Paging Nancy Grace.

That said, this is a real tragedy, and the victim is a young student at a prestigious university. There are clues and then nothing. There's obviously a story in that.

Maybe the police have a witness saying HG left the bar with JM. That, along with the witness who said she looked out of it or distressed might be enough to conclude that she was impaired (not able to make a choice of going with him)and he had his arms around her... and she hasn't returned to the things she intended to be doing (i.e. they know she was trying to get to her friends and that she had commitments to be at school or social plans the next day). Even without any biological evidence, it could be enough to charge the abduction with intent to defile.
