I hear McCarthy has forced the Senate to require 75 votes for anything to pass. This is a soft coup. Too bad the dems tired their own hands.

It's in the country's interest not to borrow trillions of dollars a year. Dems should have done what GOP is doing now, when Trump was President. But they just want more and more government.

Governance needs to keep up with population growth, economic growth, technological advancement, geopolitics and other factors. This Republican vision of minimalistic government is a delusion and would lead us on a path to becoming a third-world backwater.

A big part of what's happened since the 1950s is that more and more of the tax burden got shifted away from the wealthy and large corporations, onto the working class and small business - and meanwhile, wages for the working class have stagnated while the wealthiest have gotten wealthier, and small mom and pop stores have been decimated by big box retailers and so on. And shifting more taxes onto the working class and small business while also causing them to stagnate has also unsurprisingly reduced tax revenue leading to deficits. As for expenditures, the biggest areas of expenditure are NOT in civilian government, they are in military and other areas.
Tax revenues are higher than ever. Lots of countries have population growth, and manage to not borrow trillions of dollars.
It doesn't have to be minimalistic to keep from going into debt every year.

Tax Revenues are down this year.

Interest on debt

Tax revenue

6 trillion

Plenty to pay the debt if you are a responsible country.

Otherwise … who are the idiots buying treasuries?

Please punch me in the face by borrowing my money… taxing my measily yield… paying me back with printed dollars with far less purchasing power … and telling me that paying me back even with cheaper paper is your last priority.

There is an annual budget process followed by multiple annual appropriations bills and periodic program authorization bills. Those are frequent opportunities to reassess and revise taxes and spending and needs and debt and anything else. Raising the debt ceiling is not a budget vote. It should not be controversial. It should be a unanimous vote with nothing else attached. Fight over appropriations in appropriations bills.

The Democrats passed the budget in the lame duck, when Republicans were not in position to negotiate. And of course when the appropriations bills come up(a process that hasn't been used in 15 years), you will be complaining that they are shutting down the government rather than making a deal.

Lame duck? Is there a special rule that means certain budgets don't count?

Congress passed a budget. Now it needs to honor that budget. When the GOP passed the Trump tax cut, we didn't play this crap.

These Republicans didn't pass that budget.

Legislators don’t get to just ignore laws passed by previous Congresses. A budget is a law.

Or do you just love anarchy?

The debt ceiling issue is mostly covering Trump tax cuts that were unfunded. The Dems bills have much more fiscal responsibility baked in in terms of cuts and pay-fors.

We're now about two weeks out from running out of cash. Seems like it's about time for some cash conservation measures. Start postponing payments to states, Medicare providers, government contractors, ag subsidies, etc. Basically anyone in the business community that writes the republicans' campaign checks. Let's see how much they support this once it starts hitting them in the wallets.

Trump is responsible for 40% of the debt with an unfunded tax cut that has accrued over 7Trillion in debt. That has to be paid for. Why should it be on the backs of seniors, vets and the poor?

They're not ignoring it. They've changed their mind and have passed legislation to that effect. Are you saying that Congress can't vote to change its mind? That all laws previously passed are in stone and immutable? That's obviously NOT the case. Congress has the power of the purse. It can give money.... and take it away. Yes, the Senate needs to pass the law and the President needs to sign it, but that's the system we have.

Yes. The pattern is, rich donors take all they can in tax cuts, then soak the poor and working class with benefit cuts to pay for it.

Amazing.

And who cares about the impact of poverty and stress on our country when you’re living in walled gardens? Let them eat cake right? Republicans are truly uneducated.

The GOP just wants to destroy America. We only have debt ceiling issues and shutdowns with a Republican Congress and Democratic President. The GOP are just deadbeats.
