There is nothing stopping Biden from paying off debts. It is about whether he can borrow more money in doing so. If he uses the 14th amendment option, I would not buy that debt, as there is no obligation to pay off debt that has not been authorized by Congress. It is a good way to get some free money for the government. |
What are you talking about? All money owed is money already obligated by congress (hence debt). |
So the Democrats should have crashed the global economy when Trump was president? |
There is an annual budget process followed by multiple annual appropriations bills and periodic program authorization bills. Those are frequent opportunities to reassess and revise taxes and spending and needs and debt and anything else. Raising the debt ceiling is not a budget vote. It should not be controversial. It should be a unanimous vote with nothing else attached. Fight over appropriations in appropriations bills. |
Governance needs to keep up with population growth, economic growth, technological advancement, geopolitics and other factors. This Republican vision of minimalistic government is a delusion and would lead us on a path to becoming a third-world backwater. A big part of what's happened since the 1950s is that more and more of the tax burden got shifted away from the wealthy and large corporations, onto the working class and small business - and meanwhile, wages for the working class have stagnated while the wealthiest have gotten wealthier, and small mom and pop stores have been decimated by big box retailers and so on. And shifting more taxes onto the working class and small business while also causing them to stagnate has also unsurprisingly reduced tax revenue leading to deficits. As for expenditures, the biggest areas of expenditure are NOT in civilian government, they are in military and other areas. |
Nothing stopping him? How about the existing tax and spending laws that require the government to spend more than it taxes. |
Why is it up to Biden to fix this mess? He should just ignore it and stop meeting with republicans. |
The Democrats passed the budget in the lame duck, when Republicans were not in position to negotiate. And of course when the appropriations bills come up(a process that hasn't been used in 15 years), you will be complaining that they are shutting down the government rather than making a deal. |
The procedure being discussed is for Biden to ignore the debt ceiling under the 14th amendment and to borrow more money. It is this new money borrowed that I am saying the government could not pay because it is not authorized by Congress. |
Tax revenues are higher than ever. Lots of countries have population growth, and manage to not borrow trillions of dollars. It doesn't have to be minimalistic to keep from going into debt every year. |
Pay attention to this board. They complain that you can't cut immigration because it would mean higher prices as labor costs go up |
Yes, choices would have to be made about which spending happens. It is Biden's leverage in negotiations, as he can threaten to withhold social security checks, or military pay. |
Lame duck? Is there a special rule that means certain budgets don't count? Congress passed a budget. Now it needs to honor that budget. When the GOP passed the Trump tax cut, we didn't play this crap. |
Trump did a good job of that on his own. |
1/4 of the debt was created by Trump. |
