actually this is the case in the UNC case, they admitted a few Black kids but there are a lot of admits of white kids with lower scores. They need to get rid of legacy and they would keep sports but as a separate section-- as in there is a certain quota for athletes in the class and no-one else can get in based on athletic performance won that percentage has been filled. At least that would be transparent. |
Why is it that people refuse to acknowledge that admissions is zero sum? Using a box it INCLUDE some people necessarily means that another group has to be excluded. |
There are limited number of seats. If you include one in favor of the race, someone else got dropped due to the racial favoritism. |
-------------- The link is from reddit but the chart is not from reddit but an actual chart being used in the case. We know data is a little hard for you to process. |
That’s another false belief. A few athletes have lower scores, like ones going to the Olympics/NFL, but statistically NCAA athletes have a higher SAT/GPA than the rest of the population. |
The link didn’t work |
As a whole that may be true, but does to apply to athletes at academically elite institutions? |
DP: But that happens all the time. Legacy admits, kids in sports like sailing and skeet shooting - get admitted all the time with lower scores compared to minority students— in the name of “diversity “. College admissions were almost completely based on race up until very recent decades. As long as those students were white, most white Americans were more than fine with it. |
So does athletics exclude “a group”? |
They take up seats, but non-athelete is not a protected class, so there is nothing illegal about it. When you block off seats based on race, you are also excluding based on race and race is a protected class. |
NOPE … Every school is regulated by the NCAA and they must report their numbers. Academically elite school athletes still have on average higher scores. You can’t just take those 2 kids with lower scores and use them as a “I told you so” because they are elite in their own right. But overall the teams GPA, will be above or equal to the rest of the school Hence, preferred walk ins. |
I'm also in STEM. I work long AND hard hours. Would never put down another job though, a job that I've never done. |
Of course it's zero sum, but that exclusion is NOT deliberately aimed at keeping Asians out, which is what so many of the posts in this forum are stating. It's simply not true. |
DP. No, it doesn’t. If I have time to track down articles with stats, I’ll post them. |
If everyone else but White and Asian is included based on race, then white and asian applicants are being excluded on race. It doesn't look as bad for white applicants because numbers are skewed by legacy and sports, but an unhooked white applicant has the same impossible odds as an Asian applicant based solely on their race. |
