Well, that's true. I don't want to knock Shepherd. Everyone there loves it and it seems like a lovely school in a fantastic neighborhood. I'm just questioning whether residence fraud to attend Shepherd is endemic considering that two of the closest MCPS elementary schools to Shepherd are in Chevy Chase, and all feed to strong middle schools (TPMS and Westland). There may be some, but I don't think it's a huge problem. But, then again, I am one of the folks who is inclined to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume some folks with MD plates are nannies, grandparents, foster parents, etc.

SS, especially to the east of 16th street, is more likely zoned for Silver Spring International.

It doesn't deprive anyone of a seat at school. It just deprives everyone of tax revenue.

Gawd. What is it with the culture of chiseling and cheating in this area?! If it's not one thing, it's another. Is there some ingrained aversion to playing by the rules and a value system that says that's OK?

You do indeed sound like someone who is concerned about all children.

Frankly, the number of cars with Maryland plates and shepherd elementary stickers I see in my neighborhood makes me assume that some of them live a few blocks away... and not driving in from pg. But, then I also take off my tin foil hat and assume they are extended family, or perhaps employees of the elementart school.

This would surprise me, honestly. As far as I can tell, "a few blocks away" from the Shepherd Zone makes you eligible for either Takoma Park ES, East Silver Spring, Rosemary Hills, or Rock Creek Forest. All are good schools, all ranked slightly higher than Shepherd on GS, if one cares about that sort of thing (TPES and ESS are only slightly above, but still...). Basically, I don't see someone risking getting caught, fined, and thrown out of the system in order to get into Shepherd with those options, even though it is a well-loved neighborhood school.

Shepherd may have a more attractive and affordable before and after school program.

Good point.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

And at least those people are paying taxes in DC. Doesn't make it ok, but still.

Not necessarily. Years ago I was battling my lien holder to release my title to DC DMV for months and months. All the while I was living in DC, paying DC taxes and held a DC license. Many, many posts ago I mentioned there are many reasons why someone who resides in DC can have out of state plates. From any jurisdiction, not just MD.

People on this thread are so short-sighted.

I thought of this thread the other day when a child in my kids pre-K 4 class said to me "My mom lives in Bethesda!"

I hear you. But like a prior post stated, there are cheaters on many levels in the district. This is the BOTTOM of the barrel.

Assuming the child lives with mommy. Could live with daddy. Or grandma. Or aunt or uncle.

No, they're not short-sighted. You're just injecting a rare occurrence to justify rampant illegal behavior. But since you think trying to get out of paying your bills is acceptable, I guess you believe residency cheating is OK too.

Ha! You guessed wrong. I don't think it's ok. But I can't knock a hustler. Everyone has a hustle and it's not the same thing for everybody.
And rampant? I do believe that's a stretch.
