Federal judge rules that admissions changes at nation’s top public school discriminate against Asian

74% of Asian American women experienced racism in past year, new report says

As anti-Asian attacks on Asian American and Pacific Islanders continue to rise, a report released Thursday underscores how women in the racial group endure a disproportionate number of such incidents.

The research, spearheaded by the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, revealed that 74 percent of Asian American and Pacific Islander women reported having personally experienced racism or discrimination in the last 12 months, roughly the time since the Atlanta-area spa shootings, in which eight people, most of them Asian women, were murdered, the report pointed out.

If TJ had discriminated against white students there would have been swift political backlash against officials involved. I'm not sure why Asian voters here haven't organized the way they have in CA where they are jettisoning the same racist, progressive politicians in their state.

FCPS has asked the judge to stay his injunction pending an appeal to the Fourth Circuit, claiming it would suffer irreparable harm if required to revert to the prior admissions policy on short notice.

The materials filed with the court indicate that applications for the Class of 2026 declined by over 100 students compared to the Class of 2025. Apparently the novelty of the new (and now-rejected) approach has worn off, and students are increasingly choosing to stay at their base schools.

Such a waste of taxpayer time and money by FCPS. Shame on this ridiculous School Board for making one school the center of so much attention while neglecting most kids/schools. You truly suck as both people and as elected officials.

Who exactly is drawing to TJ admissions?

Judge Hinton already ruled the current policy is racist. How can he stay the injunction just for convenience? FCPS should appeal to the 4th circuit for stay.

Honestly it's not that hard to change the current policy. All FCPS needs to is eliminating those changes proxy for race, e.g the middle school quota.

Does anyone have a link to the FCPS actual request for a stay? Would be interested to read what their legal arguments are.

Given the overwhelming recall of 3 SF school board members and defeat of proposition 16 in 2020 in a liberal California state, we can safely assume that majority is not in favour of these changes. While most folks do want increased representatives from URMs in our top schools, and top professions, it should we done in a thoughtful way to not sacrifice meritorious students regardless of their race or gender. If we shutdown TJ or reduce the academic rigour then it will be mostly loss for middle and lower middle and poor families because companies or employers will continue to import foreign workers since they will not have access to skilled labor. Point is we need to raise everyone’s standard, not bring them down.

You don’t need to go to TJHSST to work for a body shop. You barely need to go to college
. Plus, there are only a relatively small number of TJ grads. They aren’t filling any significant gap in the labor market. It just doesn’t scale.

To increase skilled labor in large numbers, we need stronger STEM across FCPS, not a magnet program.

Why don't the URMs and disappointed Whites follow this advice? Let the Asians have TJ.. I bet you won't advocate for that, will ya?

Maybe they aren’t trying to work for a body shop?

Any qualified, STEM-interested kid should get a shot. Not just the rich kids from a few middle schools.

Rehashing of old arguments. Nothing new. The request for stay will be denied.

You have to file a stay request in district court in order to file a motion for stay pending appeal in the court of appeals. I think the arguments in favor of a stay are very strong, but Hilton will likely deny it (because he has already ruled against them). But having now checked the box with a district court stay filing, they can file a motion for a stay in CA4.

Yup. This district Court got people really excited. But don’t dream of those decals just yet! Miles to go in fight over legal outcomes.

You should be glad that t's never been legal to use race as an admission factor.
