Some quick take-aways:
* The court found that the Coalition for TJ had "standing" to sue, which effectively is a way of saying they have just as much of a right to weigh in about TJ's admissions process as anyone else around. * The admissions changes used factors there were intentionally designed to be "proxies" to discriminate against Asian-American students - the court rejected FCPS's claim the new process is "race-neutral." ("The discussion of TJ admissions changes was infected with racial balancing from its inception"). * The FCPS process set up Asian kids to disproportionately compete against each other, and the "experience factors" were designed to discriminate against students at schools with more Asian kids. * The court skewered a School Board that pushed forward despite their many reservations about Brabrand's plans, apparently because they felt they had to answer to constituencies demanding more non-Asian minorities at TJ. * The Board approved something they didn't understand, as they didn't know whether the 1.5% set-asides were based on a student's base school or attending school (which had a major impact on TJ admissions from AAP centers). * The Board's behavior was racially motivated and "patently unconstitutional." * The appropriate remedy for the Board's violation of the constitutional rights of Asian students is "invalidation" of the new admissions process. Exactly what that means presumably will be spelled out in a future order - presumably, the judge assumes there will be an appeal. Whatever else happens later in this case, the fact that we have a School Board that acted so imprudently and invited litigation that, at least in the first instance, has led a federal judge to conclude they have violated the U.S. Constitution and discriminated against Asian-Americans means these people should NEVER be elected to public office again. |
The seats have to come from somewhere. If they aren't coming from the group that constituted 2/3rds of the student body, then they aren't coming from anywhere. Race based admissions are banned, so they tried region based which includes white and hispanic kids because white kids and hispanic kids also go to schools where there are a lot of black kids. If you can't use race, geography, or a holistic approach, that means a return to the old days were there are too few black kids to report the numbers. Hopefully the board just closes the school before they return to that. |
Yeah lets setup a "Rooney Rule" for school admissions. ![]() |
So, your answer is yes. I agree that you are racist. |
PPs are right that this could actually be an impetus for the School Board to change TJ to a pure academy model or return it to use as a neighborhood school.
And either of those options could be invoked as a reason to make county-wide boundary changes since every student would now be attending a base school other than TJ and that would impact enrollments. |
We'll vote out these racist liberal SB soon enough. |
better yet. recall them all like San Francisco did. |
As a FCPS parent and an individual that is at a high level in STEM in the federal government, I think that TJ is an abomination and should be closed immediately. |
Only if you were the dictator.. BTW wtf is high level in STEM in federal government? Are you high? |
It's much easier to recall an official in California than Virginia. We will have to vote them out (or, preferably, convince them to resign or announce soon that they aren't running again). They have demonstrated, both individually and as a group, their incompetence and unfitness to hold office. A federal judge hasn't just pointed out that they are stupid, incompetent, or hypocritical. He found they violated the U.S. Constitution, which they took an oath to uphold. Disgraceful! |
If TJ doesn’t serve all of Fairfax County, it shouldn’t exist. |
Would a system where all kids that meet a certain GPA threshold is in the pool, and the students that will attend are chosen by pure lottery work? Parents can opt out if they don't want their kids to go to TJ. |
According to you? Lol |
This post demonstrates racist liberals are also stupid. They have no logical think capability whatsoever. |
I am thrilled with this decision. The changes were so incredibly racist and the new admissions process was laughably ridiculous. |
