Anonymous wrote:It starts at U10 when most parents + kids who really are not interested are too inexperienced to say NO, but by U11 and U12 they figure it out and you see a lot more Super Y drop off. Rosters of 20+ for 7 versus 7 = time to put on a thinking cap and calculate how many total minutes in games there? will be, taking into account your own vacation plans.

Roster size is realistic considering vacations and other summer distractions. My kids have played Super Y for a few seasons now and only in two games was the roster too large. In most instances there are actually roster shortages and lots of opportunities to guest play within the club.

I'm not saying this to sway anyones opinion just stating it as my overall experience. I'm not going to debate whether it is a money grab or not but the roster size is born out of necessity for game day.

And yet game day while published ahead of time doesn't always fall on the weekend. A kid doing a day camp would not be in a mood for a game. I guess you can say the parents knew what they signed up for in January, but not really. The summer camp dates aren't usually out by then. Your experience does conflict with the anecdotal stories I heard last summer when parents that signed up let me know they actually didn't play a couple games because either their team didn't show up or the other team didint. One of the weeks the team was scheduled for three games. While this doesn't refectory every team, the fact that it happened shows the level of commitment other playwrs/parents are giving it. Just seems like a league that is forcing itself on the widely spread teams. I would say a model of select tournaments would be most ideal. You get commitment out of the players and parents, they can be a little farther than usual and a family can make it part of their vacation plans. And most importantly you don't have to commit 6 months in advance.

Nothing you said here disputes my point and I agree with you. The argument about kids sitting out games because of large roster sizes simply isn't true. For summer soccer a large roster is necessary in order to field teams for all the games was my point. Yes, there are weeknight games that are difficult to make, folks have kids in camps, kids are away at camp, families take vacation. A traditional roster size won't cut it.

There are several clubs that do take Super Y seriously and basically use it as summer training for their regular team. Most teams however do not take it as seriously. It is summer soccer, nothing more and nothing less. It has been good for my kids as they have met different kids and coaches. My kids have kept in touch with former Super Y teammates and run into them at tourneys and games. It makes the world a little smaller. That isn't a reason to play but it has been overall more beneficial than not in spite of its many shortcomings stated here already by various posters.

I know a few from BRYC that went to Arlington and LMVSC last year. U9 boys do not travel far in CCL for games. I'd be more worried about how far practices are from where you live. A lot of U9 practices occur around 5 PM. Not a whole lot of time to get ready right after school but I think anywhere within 20 minutes is reasonable in this area.

With the changes to BRYC and joining ECNL I would recommend looking at all the options available. If I knew this going in this year and with some of the issues that we are experiencing this year I might have chosen differently. I was hoping to find a club we could stick with for the long haul. I will share my experience and will say this is only my opinion. Others might feel differently.

- Not sure why they even have tryouts. At the end of the tryouts they told us they take all kids regardless of skill level.
- During the tryouts we met with the coach and talked to the parents who talked about how good he was and I saw it with his interactions with the kids..During the summer he left to coach the girls and we got a new coach.
- No Communication (I feel this should be the head coaches responsibility) - From the fall until now the coach has spoken to the parents once, this is included with the recent changes and with other coaches being added/removed. Questions are asked on the sideline with no one knowing the answers. We were told we will be getting evaluations and have seen nothing. Coach doesnt address (email) the parents directly..they proxy everything through the team manager which makes no sense to me if its regarding players, coaching changes, roster moves etc. The coach should be fielding follow up questions.
- The fall schedule was a wreck. They moved field to field and after some parents complained we got a tiny space on the turf field.
- Coach to child ratio - We started with 3 coaches then lost one and were down to 2 and due to field issues they combined the U9/U10 training across 2 coaches, roughly 45 kids. Needless to say, that was a wreck. Spring has seemed to have gotten better. There are 4 coaches for both age groups and there is much more field space.
-Trainging - I feel there is very little to no emphasis on footskills. At this age I would place this near the top of what this age group should be learning. When a 9 year old asks you why they arent training footskills then you know there is a problem.

I am sure every club has its issues/challenges and the grass wont always been greened but was I expecting a better experience. We came from PWSI (pre-travel) that seemed to have everything organized from the beginning. Right after tryouts you had your roster placement, schedule on pdf with projected tournaments you would be attending, with all the information available on the website etc. Even we pre-travel we had more meetings than we have had at BRYC.

If a parent comes and talks to me around try out season I will be open about my feedback and wont be sugar coating anything. I would expect the same from other parents when tryout season starts. Hope this helps others. I sure would like to hear feedback with other parents at other clubs and if these are common issues to just get over.

Thanks for this. Any updates in the last 30 days? I noticed they have already had their first round of girls tryouts for u 9 to u 11, with more scheduled for tomorrow. Did anyone go to these, and if so, what was their experience? How many kids showed up?

My guess is whenever US Soccer posts them as it gets closer to the season. I doubt the clubs will bother posting rosters themselves. They send them in and US Soccer puts the rosters up.

I seriously doubt anything would be posted before August

The boys' DA rosters are typically posted in early August, following the playoffs in late July. Seems likely the girls' roster will be posted at the same time.

Was just curious as to when the new girls DA teams would finalize their rosters (VDA, Spirit, FCV) for their U15-19 age groups. Seems much of the chatter about these groups has died down a little bit, so maybe they've mostly completed their tryouts? Don't need to see actual roster names as posted in August.. bit would be nice to know at what point these kids have to make a commitment to DA one way or the other.

I think most roster spots are pretty locked up at this point. There are certainly a few undecideds out there but if the teams had to play tomorrow I'm pretty sure they could field a team.

Apropos of nothing, I never would have imagined when my oldest child started travel soccer that I would some day care enough about the sport to rearrange my day so I could watch a U17 World Cup qualifying match. Anyone else watching US v. Jamaica at 1:30 (streamed on Facebook live)? We have some really exciting players!

Does anyone know how many girls try out at U9 at PWSI and how many teams they form? thank you
Anonymous
Tryouts will be in spring the boys will likely fill 2-4 teams but the girls usually struggle to field 2. At the u9 age they don't really cut anyone who shows up.
