Maybe we could crowd-source a rough count of who's most selective and who's least selective at U9-U12?

(Note: Just talking about sheer numbers here. I am not going to go out and try to gauge the overall talent level of every club's U9 tryouts)

VERY SELECTIVE (80+ people trying out; more than half won't make a team)
Arlington
Vienna (boys -- girls will be lower)
McLean
Alexandria
Loudoun?

MEDIUM SELECTIVE (top team tough to make; maybe a third of those trying out won't make a team)
Braddock Road (wild card with ECNL causing shakeup)
Chantilly (CYA)
FPYC
PWSI

NOT SELECTIVE (will try to take most applicants)
Great Falls
Premier AC
Lee Mount Vernon (based on info above)
Burke? (or is there another reason they only have 1 team)
Cugini? (do they still exist?)
Team America?
SCAA? (new-ish)

NO IDEA
Herndon
Gunston
Annandale
SYC
SYA
FC Virginia
Reston
Barca
VSA
NVSC

Arlington and Loudoun by far the most selective, but they are the #2 and #1 biggest clubs in the state of Virginia.

More than half the kids make all of these clubs. Loudoun and Arlington will go 5-6 teams deep if need be at U9. That is hardley selective.

Vienna's boys usually have 80-100 for 44 slots.

Doesn't Arlington usually have about 150?

Not sure about Loudoun.

Arlington has up to 6 teams depending upon numbers as well as Vienna could go five teams deep if 90 kids show up or stay at 4 teams if 80 show up. The reality is it is essentially still a coin toss to make a team. If your kid works hard and pays attention to the coaches they will make a team. This is not a situation where 30 kids are trying out for 2 spots but rather 80-100 kids fighting for 48-60 slots.

I know a few from BRYC that went to Arlington and LMVSC last year. U9 boys do not travel far in CCL for games. I'd be more worried about how far practices are from where you live. A lot of U9 practices occur around 5 PM. Not a whole lot of time to get ready right after school but I think anywhere within 20 minutes is reasonable in this area.

With the changes to BRYC and joining ECNL I would recommend looking at all the options available. If I knew this going in this year and with some of the issues that we are experiencing this year I might have chosen differently. I was hoping to find a club we could stick with for the long haul. I will share my experience and will say this is only my opinion. Others might feel differently.

- Not sure why they even have tryouts. At the end of the tryouts they told us they take all kids regardless of skill level.
- During the tryouts we met with the coach and talked to the parents who talked about how good he was and I saw it with his interactions with the kids..During the summer he left to coach the girls and we got a new coach.
- No Communication (I feel this should be the head coaches responsibility) - From the fall until now the coach has spoken to the parents once, this is included with the recent changes and with other coaches being added/removed. Questions are asked on the sideline with no one knowing the answers. We were told we will be getting evaluations and have seen nothing. Coach doesnt address (email) the parents directly..they proxy everything through the team manager which makes no sense to me if its regarding players, coaching changes, roster moves etc. The coach should be fielding follow up questions.
- The fall schedule was a wreck. They moved field to field and after some parents complained we got a tiny space on the turf field.
- Coach to child ratio - We started with 3 coaches then lost one and were down to 2 and due to field issues they combined the U9/U10 training across 2 coaches, roughly 45 kids. Needless to say, that was a wreck. Spring has seemed to have gotten better. There are 4 coaches for both age groups and there is much more field space.
-Trainging - I feel there is very little to no emphasis on footskills. At this age I would place this near the top of what this age group should be learning. When a 9 year old asks you why they arent training footskills then you know there is a problem.

I am sure every club has its issues/challenges and the grass wont always been greened but was I expecting a better experience. We came from PWSI (pre-travel) that seemed to have everything organized from the beginning. Right after tryouts you had your roster placement, schedule on pdf with projected tournaments you would be attending, with all the information available on the website etc. Even we pre-travel we had more meetings than we have had at BRYC.

If a parent comes and talks to me around try out season I will be open about my feedback and wont be sugar coating anything. I would expect the same from other parents when tryout season starts. Hope this helps others. I sure would like to hear feedback with other parents at other clubs and if these are common issues to just get over.

Thanks for this. Any updates in the last 30 days? I noticed they have already had their first round of girls tryouts for u 9 to u 11, with more scheduled for tomorrow. Did anyone go to these, and if so, what was their experience? How many kids showed up?

I would be curious to know if folks are actually planning on staying at BRYC and why? From what I understand it has been a good club especially with the girls teams however curious how others view the change to ECNL specifically at the u9/u10 ages. Should we be staying clear at U9? Not trying to switch clubs again if we dont make the team down the road nor plan to do any crazy travel.

At U9 you will not be playing ECNL. At those ages BRYC will not be putting teams in leagues (for now) and will just concentrate on training.

Yes I get that but is that a reason to stay or join the club? Training is good but if you arent putting it to use at the games whats the point. Arent games what makes the kids want to train and play. I know that's what motivates my kid. Hence the ask about parents staying at BRYC.

Clueless.

We have been at the ASA U9 tryouts the last two years. Last year was crazy due to the birth year change, but two years ago they have around 180 boys. Will be there this weekend as well and be sure to let you know what my son experiences. Very competitive if we get 180 again for 66 spots across 6 teams.

There will be games. They will have uniforms and referees. They just won't have a "league" tracking them or scheduling for them. And maybe you won't play every weekend, but you'll play enough to be motivated and put to use what you're learning in training. And there will be tournaments.

And the selections are largely based on physical traits.

That will be the interesting to see on how they will manage that. All other clubs will participate in leagues so I assume that they won't be able to schedule games until schedules are released. I also think they will select to play against NPL or CCL clubs due to the club scheduling in those leagues as those will be able to be set-up then vs individual teams participating in NCSL.

Club soccer is worthless for developing a young player.

We have pulled our kids out of Club (and they were at a 'selective' club) for academy style training and they have developed light years over their peers that used to be at a somewhat similar technical level.

What's even more idiotic is the a**hole that keeps coming on here to list 'selective' Clubs. This is all for parental bragging rights. Yet--many players made those clubs and turned them down. Training is what matters. Period.
