Why not domestic travel restrictions to/from these areas? My DH has to go to a US government sponsored meeting in one of the counties with community spread. That CDC guy just said your risk is low no matter where you are in the US, so I guess they don't have the courage to enact domestic restrictions. Really? A week ago, they thought that in Italy too. Seems hypocritical not to fully admit we have it here now too. |
Because rhere are many people with mental conditions that prevent them from caring and making efforts beyond basics. |
If all people incluing your DH would voice concerns the meeting could go tele. Why not at this point? |
I agree, it's shortsighted. But they are expecting more cases and more deaths, so it seems they'd rather just deal with more sick people and more deaths than enact inconveniences to the American public. We are a country that like our conveniences, likes our freedoms, likes our individualism, like our travels yet also are prone to panic, anxiety and protests (plus we have easy access to guns, lots of them, so causing panic is bad all around) |
Now is a great time for anyone not working and who is eligible to apply to substitute teach. Teachers, myself included, are often the worst for going into work if we possibly can because there isn’t anyone to cover our classes with the sub shortage. What happens is classes are split up, students go and anywhere there are available seats in other rooms and listen to a different teacher. The subject or grade may not be the same. We all try to cover each other in even more crowded rooms when someone calls in and a sub doesn’t pick up the job. That means there are rooms with lots of kids and you know a third of the class is coughing and has running noses on any given day. |
Re: Masks
I understand completely why authorities want the public to stop buying N-95 masks to leave them for health care workers. These masks protect you from infection from others. What I don't understand is trying to get people to not buy or use the ordinary surgical masks that are best used for protecting others from your illness. It seems that since so many people who have either only the mildest of symptoms or who are asympotmatic it is not a bad idea in areas where there are known cases or for people who are flying to wear the ordinary masks. After all, you may be a vector of contagion and wearing a mask would protect others. The simple masks also make it very difficult for people to inadvertently touch their mouths or noses, one of the things people are urged to do to protect themselves from the virus. |
," Me too minus the fever, so I think "cold," but was your congestion in the head or lungs? Lower respiratory congestion is associated with the COVID-19 per current thinking. |
Could you reschedule / postpone an operation if elective? |
+1 Too many drinking the "risk is low" Kool-aid. Just because it's the US? And we haven't tested? Suppose we test everyone with the symptoms of the high schooler who had it. Might see a big in cases if we did. |
Especially in the DC area. I've had people thank me for covering my sneeze or coughing into my elbow, because it seems so rare in public here. Seriously. These are not people with mental conditions. Had a man cough into his hand and then expect me to shake it at work a month ago, pre coronavirus. No fing way. No common sense whatsoever. |
How are Americans supposed to stay home? Many don’t get paid leave or any assurance they won’t get fired if sick. And only higher paid jobs have *anything* like 2 weeks paid sick leave. And let’s not forget HDHPs! Americans won’t go to doctor. They’ll go out for cold medicine and spread it around. |
I have been following this closely since around January 20 and never bought the "just a flu" thesis. I agree we probably have a fair number of people with the disease who could have been caught had a lot of tests been freely available. However, I do buy the "risk is low" Kool-Aid for any one individual. Percentage of the population infected even in Wuhan is relatively low, and the vast majority have cases that they can ride out at home. I am most concerned about medical facilities becoming overwhelmed so death rates soar. I do not believe, and have never believed, that even if 100% of the population washed their hands 20 times a day we could stop the spread. Our best hope is to prevent high peaks in serious cases our hospitals have insufficient resources to handle. To that end I would support stricter quarantine measures than I think most Americans would accept. |
Since things tend to change on a dime, I hope we will have time to get where we need to be (home) before any travel restrictions are enacted. I know that won't be true if there is a sudden quarantine. |
+1 It's called "narcissism-itis is rampant". Pretty straightforward. No, you are not going to grace me with your nasty, low life, no mannered self. GTFO of the way and stop standing in the middl of the aisle. No one cares about you. |
I’m not sure how you know to test for corona? The kids and I have been sick for several weeks since we went on an international vacation (not Asia). My daughter did get a flu test this week and had flu B. We all got better but now feel sick again. Just fevers, lethargy and runny noses. It’s never ending!
I’m sure we don’t have corona, but can you get flu and corona at the same time? |
