For real. Even in CRP training you learn you can’t say, “someone call 911.” You have to say, “Jan, you go call 911.” People like direction |
I would prefer this to our current sign-up system. Some families over exceeded their point requirement while others couldn’t find jobs to meet the requirements and so they had less points. I don’t know how the logistics would work but if the team rep would point to me and assigned me a job I would gladly do that and I know most families would too. |
I prefer open signups with no points. That's what we do and we've never had trouble filling out the roles. Some people will sign up to do multiple things, some people will bring a box of cookies for the concession stand |
We had the point to you one an old team and it was terrible as it was a hot mess. Our team rep just sends out and email if your child is swimming in the meet. That doesn't sound right if some families exceed and then they get annoyed at you for not volunteering when you don't get a chance. I'd just speak up and say that. |
| Everyone feeding OP needs to rethink why they are feeding the negative. Assuming the worst and pointing fingers and blame are petty games for petty people. |
That is really odd. Who is running the meet? If this is MCSL - you are supposed to be volunteering. My husband times or does Stroke and Turn at each A meet and time trials and sometimes I do ribbon writing and meet setup. And I have little kids too young for the swim team too who make this all very difficult. Teams should be assigning jobs or have minimums hours. We have to volunteer 6-7 times each season. If your daughter is over the age of 7 or 8, she should be with her team 95% of the time - not you. The coach has to watch all the kids - stop talking to them during the meet. They really don't want to talk about your kid non stop. WE have one of those clingy parents who talks to the coach non stop and she is made fun of all the time. |
This happens at our pool. By the time I sign my kids up almost all the jobs are gone except for ones I’m not qualified for (S&T). The same people sign up,quickly. There is no complaining about volunteers but sometimes it’s had to sign up unless you’re one of the first people to sign up. I do volunteer in other ways during the week So yes, it looks like I’m sitting around at every meet. Because I am. I would volunteer if needed but there is never a need. OP your pool kind of sucks. |
I think OP had a valid concern. I don’t need to restate what has already been said, and perhaps OP could’ve phrased it differently, but many of the people who said they don’t volunteer because they believe the volunteer positions are dumb need to get off their high horse and do something for the benefit of their community regardless of personal feelings. If they want to reduce the number of necessary volunteers, they should…well…volunteer their time as a team rep or as a league board member and institute some changes. |
OP and OP's minions are judging people without knowing f$#all about everyone's situation. It's okay, swim team is all you have in your lives, we get it. |
You’re right about not knowing about everyone’s situation, but clearly you need to go back and reread this thread. It’s not my job nor OP’s job to pick up when others slack. We all have sh!t going on in our lives, but you find ways to deal with your commitments or you don’t participate. |
| Any volunteering takes time and commitment to your child. I am fascinated by the posts of those that brush it off. Clearly - they have never organized on the scale of summer swim team. I am very grateful to the wonderful folks who put In that time. So - show up to time or whatever. It says you value the hours out in to ensure your child has a positive experience. |
| I hate that kid-world runs on volunteering. Swim team is just a microcosm. My job is hard and long hours and I was THRILLED when my kids finally got beyond Volunteer Everything Always stage. Such a relief. |
| How does the point system work? What happens to a family with not enough points? |
| Look - I’ve got to work and we have a baby at home. Sorry! |
At our pool you need to volunteer for 3 jobs ox hours have 1 swimmer. If you don’t, your kid can’t go to the banquet. |
