This is an outgrowth of the "Believe Victims" ethos that is being forced onto us over the last few years. It has become socially unacceptable to simple state that you would like to withhold judgement until the facts are out. We are now required to immediately assume that the accuser is telling the truth and denounce the perpetrator. We need to get back to being objective and not rushing to judgment and engaging in reckless recriminations.

I agree with this, and I consider myself a liberal. But add to that a very palpable change in people's desire to identify with a side. In a normal (non racial) attack, healthy skepticism would be part of the discussion. "Why is he getting a sandwich at 2 am?". For that matter, responses of, "Let's believe the victim unless proven otherwise" would be offered up by those raised on giving people the benefit of the doubt (particularly as there was no other "side" to the story). Somehow, in this new comfort we take in dividing ourselves, we also immediately take sides when presented with the least bit of information. I do believe the victims, actually, but much in the way I believed my kids. Trust and verify. Verifying doesn't make me bad.

Careful. This type of questioning is dangerously close to "victim blaming." King of like "what was she doing in a dark alley alone at 2am" and that is expressly forbidden.
To be honest, I think when there are so many obvious ?? (moreso than "why is he getting a sandwich at 2am" is "what MAGA guys are familiar enough with EMPIRE *or* Jussie Smollett to call him out as "Empire n-word"??? That made me realize he truly is a narcissist if he thinks he's that famous. Nope...no one really knows you, dude. And especially not at 2 in the morning in Chicago! After that, it makes more sense to question who benefits from the story being believed.
And in this case, he is in deep with a bunch of democrat politicians who are trying desperately to get their "anti-lynching" bill passed (that contains language that attempts to criminalize WORDS on social medias a "hate speech"...so frightening...it's as though Dems have forgotten that "hate speech" IS protected speech under the first amendment! It is PROTECTED. Yes...it's icky...but so what? It's still protected and should be! Because if you start criminalizing speech, you better be prepared for someone else to decide for you what is hateful and what isn't. And look out when the group in power doesn't agree with you on what is hateful! Such a crazy slide we are on.) ACTIONS are already illegal. Lynching...ACTUAL lynching...is already AGAINST THE LAW. There is not a need for this bill except that it is another attempt to try to gain more control over people's freedoms. And they needed a catalyst...and EVENT that people could get behind and say "ooooh...Kamala Harris is right...we need this bill! Obviously!...b/c look what happened to Jussie Smollett..."
His plan was just poorly executed and fell apart too rapidly to be useful.

That's dangerous and stupid for anyone to do.

If you want sympathy, you don't just say you got attacked by two drunk guys at night -- there is no outrage in that. So you have to find something to hang the story on that riles everyone up. Makes him a hero even. But it was inconceivable.

I am less interested in the political implications of this than i am about the person himself. A complete fabrication to perhaps energize his career, and he has ruined his life. such a poor decision.

Seriously. He has really screwed up, and I wonder about his mental health leading up to this event.

Mental health? The guy is an obvious imbecile. From the beginning this was the most ludicrous story ever told.......embarrassing idiot.

He is an idiot. I am more upset over the damage his lies have done to the country's psyche.

He has gone from hero to villain. Our society is worse off for what he has done.

^Same.

He’s done a lot of damage to true victims of these sorts of crimes. I am really angry about this. And he doesn’t even have the damn decency to admit his lie, so we can all heal. He’s doubling down on his ridiculous story.

I hope this all comes out, but I do worry that his lawyers (and their crisis management team) will find a way around his lies.

The vilification of Smollett is a problem. Jussie Smollett committed a crime, that's all. It is the tinder-box-angry public that is responsible for using his alleged crime as a political platform. When it turned out to be false, they have to turn on him, accusing him of forever damaging the climate for true victims of hate crimes.

He never should have been given that power. He's just one guy.

I know the River North area pretty well and its the most docile, liberal leaning area of Chicago. Many who live there are either wealth or connected financially to afford it. This MAGA agenda is far from the River North and Gold Coast neighborhood - just sayin.

He’s a guy with a platform who exploited and exacerbated the already toxically divisive politics climate for personal gain. Sometimes all you need is a match to ignite a forest fire. The guy is also criminally stupid.....he deserves every bit of vilification and then some.

I disagree. He vilified millions of Americans with his allegations. Yes, he committed a crime, and thanks to the compliant media and Democrats, his allegations were given a national platform. Instead of waiting for more information, they immediately jumped on the story because "We must believe him."
The vilification of Smollett is not a problem. He brought this on himself. He was just too stupid to consider the ramifications if he got caught.

Totally. Agree. This is a man who is clearly trying to bring attention to an important issue. He was only making an effort to help others, and he’s being attacked for it.

This from a local station........

https://www.wbko.com/content/news/Man-arrested-after-alleged-incident-at-Sams-Club-in-Bowling-Green-505971901.html

A Tennessee man is in jail after being accused of pulling a gun on a Sam's Club customer Saturday.

According to the police report, officers were called to Sam's Club due to a person with a gun.

According to the alleged victim Terry Pierce, a man pulled a gun on him because he was wearing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat.

"I have as much right to wear that hat and support my country and my president as he has not to," said Pierce.

The police report confirms that the suspect, identified as James Phillips, admitted to flipping off Pierce and Pierce's wife because of their hats.

Pierce tells 13 News that he was shopping with his wife when Phillips "Pulled a .40 caliber out and stuck it in my face, backed up and said, 'It's a good day for you to die.'"

Pierce went on to tell 13 News, "I said, 'Then pull the trigger. Put the gun down and fight me or pull the trigger. Whichever one you want.' And he backed up and he said it again, he said, 'It's a good day for you to die.'"

The police confirms that he did have a weapon in his back pocket.

Liberals will ignore this

I think the vilification of Smollett is a huge problem, just as I think the media's quick to jump on it vilification of his "MAGA attackers" and the Democrats' (yes, Ms. Pelosi) tweets and comments about the "MAGA attackers" have been a huge problem.

Why do you want to vilify him and not others for the exact same thing? Hmmm...interesting.

I didn't express myself well. Of course Jussie Smollett is a scumbag, and he preyed off people's emotions. But part of the problem is the extreme power that was given to him by the public, simply by virtue of the fact that he alleged a hate crime. Somewhere in all of this people should also self-reflect.

Hmm. Maybe this is why the media has become so corrupt?
