Teacher shot at Newport News elementary school

A teacher and another school member (building services) searched the bag and found a full hunting knife in the bag. The teacher got in trouble for searching the bag and the child had a half day of in-school suspension (during which he still got to enjoy lunch and recess). The class was traumatized and the teacher quit about a week later- the class still has no teacher. The child is still out of control and is scary for anyone in there. It would not shock me one bit to hear that in a couple of years he brings in a gun.

I hope this teacher gets everything she is asking for. I also hope that it will lead to changes about appropriate placements and safety in schools.

A huge part of this will be modifying the inclusion program so children that are violent are not allowed to attend mainstream public school and are taught/managed in a separate building.

Why would parents refuse evaluation? Don't parents need and want help? Or do thy not get help? But still, dont' you want to know what is going on?

There are a lot of parents who don't want a special ed "label" for their kids. It's sad, but it's not an uncommon response.

Ok so every kid is included in FAPE but what about my child's right to be safe and learn? What about teachers rights to a safe workplace? Is there no OSHA for teachers? Why do the other kids and teachers have to tolerate assault but literally no other workplace in the world would accommodate that?

I had a violent kindergarten student last year. She was found eligible for an IEP and mom refused to sign it. She said she didn’t exhibit any behavioral problems at home. No kidding. She was on a tablet 24/7 at home. Mom told us this.

This. EVERY child has the right to a safe learning environment. What is wrong with the US that a teacher had to beg for support for a 6 year old? How can a parent who is not in the classroom allowed to refuse support? Why are things this bad?

The teachers told the administration who did nothing. What is the teacher supposed to do? She was probably afraid the other kids would egg the little monster on

Do you want to admit that your child is a sociopath?

This was not a case of an IEP for learning difficulties.

I think a parent can refuse placement, but there must surely be some recourse on the part of the school. Could he school should have gone to court because the child was a danger? I think? they can do that.

But, who, in their right mind with a child like that would have a gun in the house?

I would love to know more about the parents.

These parents sound like my sister with my nephew. My nephew starting showing some very disturbing violent behavioral issues when he was around 4 and things just escalated exponentially. My sister and her husband were getting a divorce and she just claimed it was because of that. But it got worse and worse. He was a nightmare to be around, was violent towards everyone, would use horrible language (esp for such a young kid, I have no idea where he would have even heard such phrases), he hurt his sister several times, abused animals, etc.

My sister refused to have him tested for the LONGEST time because she didn't want him to have a "label" or "marks on his medical record". Then his new school insisted, after he had been suspended several times for throwing things at people. He was diagnosed with several mental disorders, and started special therapies and medication. The different is amazing. She now admits she doesn't know why she waited so long (5 years) and wish she would have listened. She said she just didn't want to admit something was seriously wrong with her son.

I expect these parents are similar.

I'm wondering why they are protecting the parents and not charging them.

The program he was moved to for K is not therapeutic at all?
What about the safety and well being of those kids? Did the parents paying for that program understand the risk to THEIR kids? http://decc.nn.k12.va.us/

Most parents have absolutely no clue as to what kinds of students are in their children's classes -- all the way through high school.

The parents of the child who was touched inappropriately after falling on the playground must be furious. Im also shocked that the parents haven’t been charged yet.

So many puzzle pieces missing. Maybe, the prosecutor is making a case. Odd that there are no rumors or leaks making its way into the news.

If this had happened in nova or dc I’d guess that the parents were diplomats or politically connected somehow.
