| And I should feel bad that my middle school DC wasn't invited and never mentioned it? |
| I don't think it's by invitation, I think you just buy tickets in advance online, for 7th & 8th graders. |
| Some sort of fundraiser. Other than that I got nothing. And you don't have to be invited. |
|
It is a fundraiser for an archdiocese school in Takoma park. You just buy tickets. The popular crowd in DD school was very into this. The party was last night at Glen Echo. To each his or her own
|
| OP do not feel badly about this at all. |
| About 10 girls & 10 boys from our child's school went, not a big deal and open to anyone. |
| Thanks all. The kid hates dances, but seemed down last night, then I saw a few kids from his school (actually, it was first brought to my attention by a parent's posting on FB) were posting about it, and wondering if he was feeling left out. I think he'd rather be left out than go to a dance, though...so worrying over. Thanks all! |

There is a catholic run high school in Maryland that is basically free for underprivileged teens.
The kids go to school and work to pay their own tuition. The school also provides the children with health insurance among the other amazing things they do for these children. It is a college prep Hs for kids that might not have had the opporuptuniyy otherwise. Link to school. http://www.dbcr.org About 10 years ago a group of holy cross girls lpanned a party to raise money. Each year they pass it down to the next group of girls to throw the party. It is now very large. Everybody wears white. It's a very successful fund raiser. If you work in the corporate world you should think of providing the school an internship. I believe there was an article in Wapo about a homeless boy that went to school there. |
| Correction-started by Blessed Sacrament DC girls. And the comments about being open to all 7th and 8th graders and the charitable purpose are all true. |
| It's a popular thing to go to at my child's school but I wouldn't stress about it! |
The Cristo Rey nationwide network of Catholic schools for underserved communities is amazing. As this poster mentioned, a core element is that there is sort of a work co-op set-up like Northeastern University on the college level. The businesses that participate do a lot of mentoring for these kids and they get a leg up on what it means to be professional in the workplace, even as they have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping pay for their own education. This White Party thing might have an awkward name but it's clearly being done for a wonderful cause. |
| This year was the 4th Annual White Party, at least officially. Most of the info on here is correct however, the 1st annual in 2014 was hosted by a group of girls from various Catholic schools in DC/MD. The list of the host committee is on line for each year. Last year a few boys were added on the Committee and that continued this year. The schools represented by the host committee has expanded beyond the Catholics and now includes other private schools. There is an invitation but the party (for which you have to buy a ticket) is open to all 7th and 8th graders in the area. According to my kids, their public school buddies said its only for private school kids but, I'm betting that isn't true. When the tickets are purchased you do have to submit your name, grade and school. Girls have to wear white dresses, boys a white shirt, ergo the name. It is definitely the "popular crowd" that goes, they all seem to know each other through sports and CCs and whatever. It is THE big deal for those kids. Its a dance with a band and basically just a huge middle school "scene" that some kids love and others would hate (I have both kinds of kids). |
So all the popular kids are athletes and belong to country clubs? Do only popular kids play sports and go to country clubs? It's all so confusing. |
She only described the small group of kids she knows. I know a whole other group of non CC geeks that went. |
But she--a mother--stated with such authority that it was the popular crowd that went. How did the non CC, non-athlete geeks infiltrate the exclusive event? This is why I feel very sorry for my middle schoolers in this town. The parents are just awful. |
