Well, Madame Tussauad’s London is taking them seriously and removed Meghan and Harry from Royal Family display. Ouch. That was fast.

Sigh; at least have the decency to quote the article and not make it seem as if they just tossed their models aside: "Mr Davies added that the couple will still feature prominently at the waxwork museum. “As two of our most popular and well-loved figures they will of course remain an important feature at Madame Tussauds London as we watch to see what the next chapter holds for them,” Mr Davies stated.

Why do people care so much about the money?

It's like they're personally offended and want Harry and Meghan to give back the money spent on renovating their house in England.

They'll still need somewhere to live when they're there??

They intend to set up housing in North America and England.

Americans love royalty, do not really understand the Prince vs Duke thing, do not really care about line of succession, and love MM. Have you guys seen mainstream American media twitter about this? They are overcome with giddiness about MM coming closer to home.

That must be why it all worked out so well for Fergie when she moved across the pond to become a shill for Weight Watchers. Oh wait...

Oof. That was swift.

America does not love MM. Gayle King’s specials about Meghan and Harry barely were a ratings blip. People magazine (which MM’s PR firm pays for positive stories), sit unsold at grocery checkouts. Those magazines DO sell when Kate or the Cambridge kids are on them.

Fergie doesn't have half of Meghan's brain, for starters. . .

NP here. MM can't sneeze without creating a 50 page thread on basic ol DCUM. Why would you think general public interest would wane in them Coming to America?

Even then they wouldn’t be satisfied. They’re just sad, angry people.

I would assume that British tax payers would care a great deal about wasting money on people who are not representing their country.

You nitwit — the point is THEY ARE NOT WITH THE ROYAL FAMILY. They will be put with other random celebrities. The shade.

What in the ever loving eff are you talking about. Do you work at a tabloid with your fingers on sales data? If so post it.

They don’t love all royals. They love ‘Senior Royals’. Do you really think anyone cares about Anne, Edward, Andrew or their kids? Maybe when they do something like Andrew. Day to day? Nope.

That’s because she joined the Royal Family and became a princess - Cinderella! Not because she is intrinsically interesting. Once the tie to the Royals is severed, her carriage turns back into a pumpkin. Maybe she can get work on reality tv, though.

Perhaps these two found comfort in each other, and relate to each other. Good for them for wanting to distance themselves from the drama and change things going forward.

yes!! GREAT for them! But then give back the titles, the IG handle, the website, the things paid for by the Duchy (pretty much everything) and go on your way.
No one is saying they shouldn't leave. It is more like, you want leave? Ok. Leave the perks at the door. Thanks!

Read their Funding post. They are giving up all the financial perks with the exception of continuing to reside in Frogmore Cottage, if the Queen allows, while they are in the U.K. They are splitting their time, not leaving completely, so that they can still do things to support the Queen and continue to work with their patronages. As such, it appropriate they keep their titles, but they are "taking" anything else anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't appreciate and look forward to the financial opportunities that will open to them with this move, but it sounds like they are really motivated by a desire to do more substantive work in terms of philanthropy and such. One of the articles linked earlier by a Meghan critic said the couple seemed bored by the ceremonial stuff like ribbon cuttings. Both Meghan and Harry have pretty well developed world views and a strong work ethic. I don't think they like having to be so apolitical about everything. Their IG post makes it sound like they are going to throw themselves into more serious work than the PR and ceremonial stuff that necessarily takes up so much of their official royal duties.

I doubt it's quite so simple. They are certainly not giving up the security, which runs into the millions every year. Who pays for that, the British taxpayer or themselves?

Frogmore Cottage is also funded by the taxpayer. It just had a 2.7 million renovation. Paid for by the taxpayer.

So it's much more complicated than you might want to think.

Their security is like that of former presidents-- it is ensured and paid for by taxpayers not as a benefit to the individuals protected but as a necessity for national security. If over time Meghan and Harry really do establish independent, private lives, their security needs may go down. But that's up to their security services to determine. Given the level of (often racist) vitriol leveled at Meghan, I wouldn't be surprised if she gets more threats than the other royals. President Obama certainly did.

Ummm no. That's not a thing - ask Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie who lost their tax payer funded royal protection officers. (they may still have some but they are privately paid for by their father)
