Hoax: Hate crime attackers: "This is MAGA country."

So, a question here.

If the brothers did not really attack Smollett, what would be their charge? Taking payment for handing him a rope? Did they even put the rope around his neck? Was this supposed to be on camera? I guess the mailing would be a federal crime.

Interesting that they went to Nigeria right after the incident. Perhaps, that was the plan--everything --the investigation--was probably supposed to be completed by the time they returned.

I'm not the smarted person in the world, but I think I could have come up with a far better scheme.

This is hilarious! All the liberals who were so horrified in the beginning of this thread eating crow now. I love it.

If the brothers did it at the direction of Smollett, they can't really be charged with anything if I understand the facts correctly (which I may not).
They didn't file a false report. Of course, they didn't report the incident, but not sure that could be charged.
Now, if it is discovered that they sent the letter Smollett received, there is probably something there. But, once again, if it was at Smollett's direction, who knows?

So, a Democrat in trouble for making false allegations against Republicans hires a Kavanaugh to help him out.
Man, reality is crazier than fiction.

The individual who reported the incident hasn't shown up for follow-up interviews with the police. So interesting.

Jussie just needs to do a 28 day impatient rehab stint and then go on the View and explain how Trump and he Covington kids made him do it.

So, Nana Efua Mumford is saying she wishes that this hate crime really happened because it fits her narrative and if it is fake, it is bad for the show and for her preconceived notions?
Wow. Just wow.
Maybe a little self-reflection is in order.

I wanted to believe Smollett. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list. I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all because the consequences if he were lying were almost too awful to contemplate.

And yet I struggled with Smollett’s story.

If Smollett’s story is found to be untrue, it will cause irreparable damage to the communities most affected. Smollett would be the first example skeptics cite when they say we should be dubious of victims who step forward to share their experiences of racist hate crimes or sexual violence. The incident would be touted as proof that there is a leftist conspiracy to cast Trump supporters as violent, murderous racists. It would be the very embodiment of “fake news.”

And that reason, more than any other, is why I need this story to be true, despite its ugliness and despite what it would say about the danger of the world I live in. The damage done would be too deep and long-lasting. This could be one tragedy that the Lyon family — and more importantly, the ordinary people who loved the show and invested in Smollett and his character — could never overcome.

Wow, wow, wow. I'm sure she's not alone in wishing the story was true - it just checks so many boxes for liberals. However, she is correct when she notes the "irreparable damage to the communities most affected". Smollett has set back ACTUAL victims. So those of you complaining that victims are doubted/not believed, you can give a big, hearty thank you to Jussie Smollett for contributing to that injustice.

Interesting that even good ol' Avenatti acknowledges that he and others owe apologies if it turns out that Smollett is guilty of orchestrating his own "attack" (which, of course, he is).

I hate Trump and I didn't think the story made sense from the beginning. To me, the political nature of this story was a good hook. If you want sympathy, you don't just say you got attacked by two drunk guys at night -- there is no outrage in that. So you have to find something to hang the story on that riles everyone up. Makes him a hero even. But it was inconceivable.

I am less interested in the political implications of this than i am about the person himself. A complete fabrication to perhaps energize his career, and he has ruined his life. such a poor decision.

Seriously. He has really screwed up, and I wonder about his mental health leading up to this event.

Mental health? The guy is an obvious imbecile. From the beginning this was the most ludicrous story ever told.......embarrassing idiot.

Did you read his twitter feed? This was a "kill two birds with one stone" effort.

It was a badly planned caper. So many things were red flags, like them yelling "This is MAGA country". This thing needed a script editor.

I actually LIKE that the thread title hasn’t been changed, even though its apparent to everyone this was a hoax.

By not changing it, it reminds everyone of the implicit bias here. There is no way anyone can argue that this site is a fair arena for discussion, that there isn’t a very heavy thumb on the ideological scale. Not when things like this stand.

I hope the thread title is never changed.
