An article I read said police were being careful to make sure Jussie didn’t contact them. They’re potential witnesses to alleged crimes (filing false police report, potential fed charges if the hate mail was part of the hoax). I’m guessing the police offered immunity if they talked/threatened charges if they didn’t, so they talked.

Maybe a little self-reflection is in order.

I wanted to believe Smollett. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list. I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all because the consequences if he were lying were almost too awful to contemplate.

And yet I struggled with Smollett’s story.

Smollett would be the first example skeptics cite when they say we should be dubious of victims who step forward to share their experiences of racist hate crimes or sexual violence. The incident would be touted as proof that there is a leftist conspiracy to cast Trump supporters as violent, murderous racists. It would be the very embodiment of “fake news.”

No doubt the brothers flipped on Jussie. No doubt at all. As soon as it was announced they had been released on Friday with no charges it was 100% obvious what had happened. A handful of idiots took that news to mean that all three were in the clear but that's about it. Police could probably hit them with some kind of conspiracy related charge but JS is the much bigger fish. The brothers walk (they already did) in exchange for rolling over on Jussie.

Doubt Jussie will try to contact them at this point. I'm sure they've been instructed to tell the police immediately if he does. They're cooperating witnesses now (not co-conspirators) and have almost certainly gone on record telling police everything they know. Now way Jussie's gonna influence their actions at this point.
