They ask everyone to reclass because it's an extra year of tuition for the school, and the kids are bigger on the court/field.

It is a joke academically. It's school motto is actually, "Work hard, play hard, pray hard, but most of all, be a good guy!" Seriously.

My son attends Mater Dei. He did reclassify, but it was probably the best thing we ever did for him in terms of emotional maturity. Academically, it is NO joke. In sixth grade, he has 2 - 3 hours of homework a night—sometime more. Unlike MCPS, they have semester exams. Yes, the son of Edward Bennett Williams is President of the school, but I am not sure why that is relevant. Families who send their boys to Mater Dei often do so because they see the school as a gateway to Prep, GZ or Saint Johns (usually, in that order). I could see my son attending any of the aforementioned high schools, but I could not see him anywhere other than at Mater Dei. He absolutely loves it there.

I'm sure he loves having teammates all 1-2 years older than the opposition. Be a good guy!

Most of the 16-year-old freshman peak by the end of their sophomore year when others start to hit their grown spurt.

Come on man, you have no idea what you are talking about - in about 60 seconds you can find impact players in key D-1 programs:

Terry Lindsay a junior, has started last two years at D-mid for Duke (ranked #3); Gold Medalist starter for US-19 national team....will likely be All American next year.

David Lipka, sophomore starter at midfield Syracuse (ranked #7)

Austin McDonald, a senior, three year starter for Georgetown (ranked #17) and a team CAPTAIN

This is supposed to be the IAC thread, and frankly, once you hit the HS level the age thing goes out the window.

thank you...to the dads with grade school and middle school sons, please start a new thread and leave this for IAC 2019 Lacrosse Season

Was your son a delayed entry (born prior to 9/1) and repeat; just a delayed entry; born after 9/1 (like most other schools) or born after 12/1?

MD also refuses to have their 7th graders play 8th graders at other schools when they ask so the teams can compete at the same level.

Pathetic.

Can you also share that with posters sharing details on alums in college, seems like it's just as relevant to the 2019 IAC Season.

My Mater Dei son is on a club lax team and every guy from other schools on it born after June have been held back. Mater Dei is no different from other private schools, esp all boys schools. No difference. Period.

Also, the number of boys who enter Mater Dei in 6th and are repeating is very small. 1 or 2 out of 40.

In my son’s class, maybe 2 were born before June. 3/4 were born after sept. And a couple were
Born after Jan of the next year.

The exaggeration on this issue is huge. Can someone provide similar stats for Landon or STA. I know a number of boys there and the fact pattern is the same.

Blatant lie. The 7 and 8th graders are combined together, with A and B teams. Each team has a combination based solely on talent. Nice try though.

Wow, no dog in this fit, but these whining parents complaining about the ages of Mater Dei and Prep students sound like jealous little children who are lashing out and making excuses for their teams loosing to these schools. As pps have said, being one year older doesn't matter in high school, especially on varsity when kids have completed their growth and development. Also, if a kid is big and tall that is genetics not the difference of one year in high school. Someone who is short, weak, and/or not a great lax player is not all of a sudden going to be tall, strong, and amazing at lax in one year. Not to mention the fact, that the students who repeat a grade are limited in numbers. It's not like the whole team has repeated or the whole grade. Give me a break, stop whining and making excuses. Instead, get outside and practice with your son so he can improve his skills. Kids with better skills will always run circles around other kids, even if they are a year older.

LOL. Had a great HS career at Prep. You think he will be an NCAA AA next year? LOL.

You must work for Chip.

There is some reclassing going on, but not every club team has reclasses, let alone all of them. Mater Dei has by far more reclassed kids than any other DMV private school. Not even close. It's also a fact that the school's academic reputation is crud.

No shock that most Mater Dei kids are dumb as rocks.
