Government Shutdown - Sep 2025 Thread

At this point, can we name a private sector company that is favorable to consumers, not just shareholders? I am in Europe right now on vacation and I feel terrible about America. The vibe here is so… calm. We have let companies destroy the country.

I regulate a sector that has very rich companies. You wouldn’t believe the shenanigans that we catch them in. They think they’re being sneaky getting away with things (environmental damage, safety violations, shady financials) and then every time we catch them they just pay the fine and say “my bad!” They would love for less government regulation! Please someone tell me again why federal employees aren’t needed.

Ah yes, just what we need. Air safety ensured by a for-profit company that wins as the lowest bidder and is upended by a new company every five years. What could possibly go wrong with that?

And the we’d have Feds running the contracts. I’m very proud of federal workers but one thing Feds get a failing grade on is running contracts. We always have the worst contracts and all the companies take advantage of us. We pay 10x what normal companies pay and we get a sub par product. Even putting out contracts for bids is problematic.

Where are you reading they’re caving? Schumer can’t have a 10 day CR. There’s no option to amend the CR that’s on the table without the House voting and they’re out until 10/6

Politico was reporting senate dems being ok with just starting negotiations on the healthcare issues. That seems like a pretty soft ask.

Why are they asking for emergency covid subsidies to be extended? Its so odd, they should negoiate something of value this make them look so dumn and missing the point. They should be fighting for re-instating rif'd workers and other things people can get behind on.

People need to renew their insurance in the next couple of months and want to know how much they’ll be paying. Yes, it was a Covid subsidy but it helped people get health insurance that they now won’t be able to afford. I guess they think fighting for healthcare is something neutral that voters will support.

well why not ask for more covid money to continue, i was enjoying no penalty 401k withdrawls, also i'd love a forgivable PPP loan, LOL yes moar, moar free money

But with glimmers of hope. Plenty of time, still, for a deal.

The House only has a pro forma session tomorrow. I don't think they could vote on a different CR even if they wanted to.

Schumer could still try to surrender, but I'm not sure anyone else would follow.

Schumer said he would not do a 7 or 10 day CR.

It's too late, unfortunately. This is going to destroy the DC economy, especially if there are widespread RIFs.

Whomever concedes is going to face the wrath of voters.
