Depends on the state school. UVA is the best school in the South, so it probably is.

Which south are we talking about? The one with Duke, Vandy, Rice and Emory?

Vandy, Rice, and Emory all trended down this year, UVA trended up and isn't stopping anytime soon. Duke is just a basketball school.

UVA trended up to the #5 public.

It’s obvious that a troll is deliberately trying to make UVA look bad.

It's all about momentum. You want your kid to end up at a school that will continue paying off 10, 20 years down the road. UVA is only going up, and based on potential it's the best school in the South. I'm not saying it's the best school everywhere, just the South, which I think is more than reasonable. The extremely loyal alumni base helps kids get top jobs and opportunities anywhere in the country, not just the South. It's law and business schools are also by far the best in the South. Not sure what there is to discuss here.

UMD gives alot of aid to First Gen, Low income, and URM. This is why they have risen so much in the rankings.

This isn’t about UMD?

dp.. I think the UMD poster is giving an example of why a college could have gone up in the ranks.

Someone posted in another thread that the pell grant factor was only an extra .5% in the ranking. I don't know if that's true.

That’s incorrect. 6 percent for pell grant graduation rates and performance, 5 percent for first gen graduation rates and performance, so over 10 percent of a school’s score. In addition, there is an overall graduation rate factor that looks at graduation after six, rather than 4 years.

1000% if more colleges reduced their coa, then they wouldn't need legacy and rely on donors. You'd see more UMC/MC class students applying. Right now, a lot of high stats UMC/MC students don't even bother applying to those expensive colleges because of cost.

Which was great bc both of my mc/umc kids got into top 15... checks new list... top 20 schools with outstanding financial aid that made it a lot cheaper than Maryland. Don't think most middle-class-ish people realize that if Northwestern, Rice, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, Chicago, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and similar accept someone, it's generally going to work.

Berkeley, Michigan, UCLA, UNC, UVA, Georgia Tech are completely out of reach for OOS families that earn a salary. But those higher tier, high endowment private schools are very often much more affordable than state flagships.

I think you missed the point. If those expensive schools lowered the coa, you wouldn't need so much aid, and more students would apply. As it is, a lot of students from donut whole families do not apply because they aren't going to get much aid, and it's too expensive.

The "aid" is simply a discount on price. There are no loans. And the "donut hole" number is going to be variable, depending on other kids going to college etc etc

Depends on the family situation. At Princeton, for instance, for families earning less than $100,000 annually, tuition, room and board is $0. That covers about 25 percent of the student body. A family earning about $150,000 would be expected to pay $12,500. There are discounts available for families earning up to $300,000 a year.

For a lot of families, it's cheaper to go to an elite private than a state flagship. You just need to get in.

It’s almost like you’re willfully voiding the entire existence of Duke.

Maybe you need to braoden your social circle?

I get it, but in reality, at Michigan, virtually every single program/department within the University is top 10, or even top 5 in the country. UVa cannot come close to saying the same thing.

The UVA boosters in the forum really need to take a step back.

Again, Duke is just a basketball school. Kids with actual academic ambitions don't go there. On the other hand, UVA funnels in dozens of geniuses from TJ every year, and all of those kids are more capable than any kid at Duke.

Social mobility is a good thing. State flagships should be at the forefront of promoting this.

Could be why Princeton is #1, but most of the expensive colleges don't give that much aid out. That's why they got dinged.

I don't think they are playing the game correctly. They should lower the coa so that more students apply, thereby lowering their acceptance rate. If they are giving so much aid out, then what's the point of making it so expensive? Is it because rich people feel like they are getting quality when they spend $80K/yr on a degree? It's like buying a Range Rover.. it's not worth the price but it makes people feel exclusive I guess because they can afford to pay that much for a car that breaks down all the time.

Outside of the southern and perhaps the middle Atlantic states, UVA is not a thing in this country. Law school rankings are in a flux because most top schools are not cooperating with USNWR surveys anymore. As for business rankings, UVA undergrad has dropped from #8 to #12 and is now behind UNC. Speaking of UNC, it is now ranked higher than UVA. I am not sure where you got the feeling that the school has so much momentum going for it currently. By the way the last time I checked, UNC was also located in the south. Id say that school, not UVA, has momentum.

I’d say most are highly ranked with very few outside the top 25. Still considerably better rated than UVA.

PP really thinks that TJ is the only school in this country with STEM geniuses, with its whopping one Regeneron finalist in the last three years!

I can’t tell if this is a troll post or not. Duke funnels a lot of kids from NCSSM, which is also a phenomenal school. It’s ranked right with Stanford and Harvard for research funding. It has top law, medicine, and business programs. Campus is beautiful and it’s a relatively “new” school. And it does all of this while still having a great sports and social culture.
