Because of gender dysphoria. Not to cry. |
OK, so Gender identity is a person’s inner thoughts and feelings (not visible to others) about their "gender" which is a social construct of norms, behaviors and roles that varies between societies and over time. These definitions don't explain the relationship of gender and sex, and based strictly on these definitions gender in no way relates to biological sex. Assuming that is the case, So if a person's gender identity about their gender is not aligned, why does gender affirming care include changing sexual characteristics (hormones, anatomical features)? |
I'm dizzy reading this and stunned this is being discussed as if its true science. |
I honestly want to know what "assigned female or male at birth" means. It seems as if it's being described as a guess. |
| I can't figure out why some of you care so much how others describe themselves. |
It’s terminology co-opted from the intersex community. |
In my kid's case, it was because he was bullied and rejected and this group of kids were nice to him. Told him the reason he was a sensitive was because he was actually a girl, as if boys can't be sensitive. |
NP. I don't know what's so complicated about it. Also the "true science" comment is interesting. I would say that since gender is a social construct it isn't as much about science as it is about sociology. The same way that since money is a social construct so you talk about it in finance class and not science class. |
There is a very good overview here: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/600/1135511.page#25141902 |
If this did not have an impact on society as a whole, most reasonable people would not care. However, the truth matters and if you are going to make (in my opinion) radical claims like gender and sex are distinct and the former is totally subjective it seems to me you should be called to explain it. The baseless mantra of “trans women are women” is what brings me pause and I suspect others who are far more liberal than I. |
NP. My point of confusion is also that gender affirming surgery seems to be contradictory to the idea that gender is a social construct. |
I don't care how others describe themselves. I care about regressive gender roles, science denialism, irreversible damage to children, dismantling of sex-based protections for women, and preserving the ability of women to create and maintain female only spaces. |
The point I was making earlier is that if we treat who we call “man” and “woman” as dependent upon a subjective reading of the definition of gender, then any man (read: assigned male at birth) can become a woman and claim for themselves the experience of women (from workplace discrimination, Title IX in sports, sports in general, all the way to pregnancy and childbirth) - which essentially erases women if there is no biological distinction. These to me are just some of the many reasons why modern gender theory is a bad idea and does not ring true. I do not doubt that an extremely small portion of the population struggles with their identity, I just don’t think it makes them what they biologically are not. |
What is the actual impact on society? |
I don't think it's accurate to say that gender is in *no* way ever related to biological sex, just that it doesn't always align for everybody the way it does for most people. And why does gender affirming surgery seem to contract the idea that gender is a social construct? Some people have gender affirming surgery because they want others to see their true selves (sorry that is worded so horribly, I'm not an expert on this and I'm tired), and if surgery is about how they interact with socially, then yeah it's all part of the social construct thing. |
