Have you guys seen this news story? It blew up yesterday on Facebook and apparently WJLA ran a story about it. Allegedly, a waitress a The anitas was left a receipt with no tip on it and at the bottom is written "great service, don't tip black people." The receipt is posted but it looks old and crumpled, conveniently doesn't have the time and date portion included, is also conveniently missing the card users name above the authorization line and the handwriting used for the numbers and signature and the message are totally different. Everyone is saying they've "confirmed it" but it isn't adding up for me. The receipt is also a reprint which it says right on there.
It's not that I don't think this stuff happens but now people are donating money and it's on the news and the receipt itself which is the proof just looks shady. Too many of these stories turned out to be hoaxes even after the news reported on them. Am I alone in questioning this story as presented? |

There's also now a YouCaring set up for the waitress to earn her $7500 because....? Not sure the justification.

Yes. And stop sock-puppeting. It doesn't make your racism any more interesting. |
I'm not sock puppeting! Someone else posted the news link. Why is it racism to question this? Are we supposed to completely buy all stories as presented particularly now that money is being raised? Stories like this are proven to be hoaxes all the time. |
So let it be proven as a hoax if it is! Why are you so bound and determined that we all cast doubt? You say on the hand that these episodes do happen -- right?? Or do they not? What is your agenda here? There are thousands of Go Fund Me pages. Why are you so upset about this? That, my friend, is racism. |
It's really not. You don't know anything about me to say that. I actually am pretty against all GFMs which, you can't know this, but I have commented on threads about them before. I don't see why you think it's automatically racist to question a story like this when a lot doesn't make sense at face value. As for agenda... to start a discussion? It's a local story that's unusual and generated a lot of attention. |
don't you know? one hoax means that racism is all one giant hoax. no individual has ever been treated in a racist manner. it's all in their head or a lie. but, if you try to mention systematic disparities where white people have advantages, you are a RACIST!!! |
NP. Y'all are nuts. This is Off Topic. Save your craziness for the Political forum. The receipt might be legit, might be fake. It doesn't harm anyone to discuss it online on DCUM. |
We are discussing it. This is a discussion. It may not be the discussion you want, but it's a discussion. |
| Why make that leap? Nobody said racism is a hoax just because this story is presenting as off. Critical thinking now = racism? I guess I was also racist when I questioned the UVA rape story, Sheri Papini and that picture of a frozen wave around a Michigan lighthouse. |

Yeah, I saw that on the news last night. I think those are good reasons to be skeptical.
It was also weird that the president of the Loudoun chapter of the NAACP was involved. Or involved himself. Either way, it suggests that the Loudoun NAACP really doesn't have a whole lot to do if one stiffed tip is a huge crisis. Count me as skeptical. |
| At first i was horrified and then saw the discrepancies. Put it this way, i wouldn't donate any money or go out of my way to give that particular waitress an extra tip. |
| Wondering why racist is in quotation marks. It's super racist. Is the receipt real? Probably. But being either way the comment is racist. |

Also
Phillips Thompson, the president of the local NAACP, posted the following message on Facebook Sunday: “I generally don't get to have too many quiet days being president of the local NAACP because I live in Loudoun County, Virginia and if it isn't the schools, county, towns or politicians, it's some knucklehead trying to prove a point … I do believe under the current political climate this is just the beginning. Can't even get a quiet day to watch football. Well the bell is rung, time to go into action.” |
