The other issue is competing for field space at TSJ with ALL their other programming.

This seems like a big one. STJ has their one field divided into four each chock full of paying customers doing other sports. Is STJ really going to just give up that field every afternoon for practice. You also have the weight room - do people paying premium rates for a gym really want to lift with a fake high school football team?

TSJ can't even get Fairfax County permits for football fields b/c not having a rec league and being For-Profit puts them last on the list and the fields are taken before they ever get down that far on the list.

A couple years back they were holding games for a school whose football field wasn’t accessible. They can hold games there.

They still hold games there. Games are easy- once a week for a couple of hours. It's the multiple hours of practice per day that are going to put pressure on the field's availability that won't work

A lot of parents are going to be pissed. They are paying for their kid to play soccer, lacrosse, rugby or whatever and all of a sudden their times are changed or practice schedule is reduced to accommodate the desires of "Coach Overton."

The weight room will be a disaster. It's bad enough as it is with parents using STJ as a "babysitter" and dropping their kids off for a few hours and the kids just half a$$ing around in the weight room and gym.

St james only has one full indoor turf field? Yikes.

My kid does training there in the off season. I wouldn't be pissed, I'd just cancel. For the most part, there are other options. STJ is convenient because they own an indoor field, but if the field becomes inconvenient, then so does STJ. Thinking about how many kids are on those fields and how much each is paying, the academy seems to be the one that will ended up without field space

No way TSJ would cancel all those teams' practices and games on that field for one football team. No mater what time day or night when we visit, that field is partitioned off into multiple fields where soccer and lacrosse (or maybe field hockey?) teams play. It is always packed, back to back sessions. One team leaves, the next one is waiting to go on the field.

An ad for St. J. featuring Overton just came across my IG.

An email from Dr. Thompson to the parents sent at 3pm. So he is going to continue to act like everything was sunshine and roses:

01/27/2025

Dear Hawk Families,

It is with a mix of admiration and bittersweet emotion that we announce Mr. Darryl Overton will be concluding his tenure as the Hayfield Secondary Head Football Coach, effective February 3, 2025, to pursue an exciting opportunity. Mr. Overton has been offered and accepted the position of Director of Football at The St. James and Head Football Coach of The St. James Performance Academy. This transition represents an important personal career choice, reflecting his exceptional talent and reputation as one of the nation’s leading high school football coaches. While his tenure as head football coach concludes on February 3, 2025, Mr. Overton will continue to serve as the security specialist at Hayfield for the remainder of the 2024-25 school year.

During his tenure at Hayfield, Mr. Overton has had a profound impact on the lives of our students and student athletes. Under his leadership, a number of student-athletes achieved success both on and off the field. His commitment to excellence helped guide a number of our athletes to earn college scholarships, furthering their education and athletic careers at the collegiate level. His dedication to fostering both athletic and personal growth in our students will leave an enduring legacy in our community.

In the coming days, the Activities Office, led by our Interim Director of Student Activities, Bryan Harris, will share details on the process and timeline for selecting Mr. Overton’s successor. We remain committed to fostering a culture of excellence within our school community, ensuring that our football program—and all of our students—continue to thrive and succeed.

Thank you for your continued collaboration as we work together to build a bright future for our athletes and the entire Hayfield community

Sincerely,

Dr. Thompson

The Hayfield football team will, I predict, struggle mightily for a few years no matter who the new coach is. It's my understanding, the majority, if not all, of the playing time went to the traveling show players of Overton. Most of those kids will likely go back to PWC or the STJ scam.

What you will have left is a smaller ( in numbers) of kids who have little to no game experience for over a year, or kids who have never played at all. Another local team destroyed (Freedom being the other)by him as he moves on to his next "project."

Thank, Darryl. It's clear you care about the institutions you are/were a part of, and "The Fam."

What a despicable email

WOW! Clearly the principal isn't willing to admit that anything Overton did was wrong! "admiration and Bittersweet emotion" ??? As though Overton was a long-time coach who was a respected part of the Hayfield community for decades instead of someone who is primarily responsible for embarassing FCPS and Hayfield and causing untold strife for those actual Hayfield students who wanted to play for their school and were pushed out.

That principal is showing he has no principles. Character is supposed to count -- but I guess the fact that the principal is still there says something about how much character counts at FCPS.

Wouldn’t the team practice midday? Virtual Virginia (how STJ does their school) doesn’t have class all day IIRC.

The principal needs to go. That email made me want to throw up.
