I never understood the National Anthem at the start of games. We don’t play it before plays, concerts, movies, school, tennis, golf, work. Why certain HS and pro team sports? I get it at the Olympic medal ceremony, but other than that get rid of it. As far as social protests that’s all fine but don’t ruin another person’s career due to their beliefs. That’s what your likely protesting against in the first place (injustice). |
| lol is Olympics Soccer even a big deal? |
This. The thought that you meaningfully protest by giving up your platform defies logic. |
It is an effective platform due to the media coverage. Look how much it is being discussed here. |
You are not at the olympics on the taxpayers dime to politic. Athletes should be there to perform, it seems several have their priorities wrong. |
Don't be naive. This is done to earn more money. I don't see Rapinoe or Morgan visiting rough neighborhoods or kneeling in front of police stations or donating to underprivileged kids, but they do their two minute protest routine on national TV and they get big contracts advertising big brand products from companies that want appear to be socially responsible even though these players' contributions on the field are lacking. |
So you'd support them if they knelt in front of police stations instead? Of course you would. Not. |
They just need to go away. We don’t need anymore hate mongering and race baiting in sport. |
I think you're in luck, because their poor performance will hopefully prompt a quick dismissal from the team. Then they can get some younger players who are more concerned with playing soccer well, instead of politicking. |
I have absolutely no problem if they kneel in front of police station. It is their right, but they do not do it, which is also their right. |
Prompting discussion about how they’re alienating people doesn’t make for an effective platform. |
The NFL has heavily promoted causes like the military and breast cancer for many years. Are you ok with that politicking? Is it only ok for some causes which you agree with? Who gets to decide which causes are worthwhile? Yes money is involved but for both sides. The NBA is probably the sports league that best supports their players making political statements. They do it in part because their audience wants it and they are catering to the demands of their audience, which helps make money, but who cares because it also advances the players' causes. Businesses like Nike and Walmart do it all the time. Why should sports be any different? In all these cases the views being promoted are a reflection of a sizable segment of society. The athletes aren't inventing and leading the causes, they are just giving voice and awareness to those who don't have a platform. |
| You're equating BLM to the military or a cancer charity? |
I’m not making a judgement on anything. Just pointing out that they are all causes that players and organizations have supported. Some causes I agree with some I don’t but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t promote them. |
I cannot agree more! Davidson was already in motion. |
