Why are goldendoodles so popular?

Those with massively shedding dogs, examine the food you are feeding. Sometimes that can have a big impact. When I swapped out my dog's kibble for a higher quality one, shedding went from tons to reasonable (i.e. as long as I brushed her every few days I could vacuum just once a week). Friends who feed raw say the shedding is even less, but I can't go that far yet.

People want the personality of the Golden and the lack of shedding from the poodle but this often does not happen. I wish breeders were much more honest about the type of dog your puppy could become so that people could really understand that their ‘oodle’ may or may not shed so they should not get an ‘oodle’ if they require a non-shedding breed. And the puppy may or may not have the golden personality so they should not get an ‘oodle’ if they really need that personality type. i am so tired of hearing about people who give thousands of dollars to a breeder who has assured them their new puppy will be low to no shed and when discovering the dog sheds then gives the dog away or gives to rescue. I blame the breeders for propagating misinformation. As a buyer please try and support reputable breeders who are honest. I do not dislike ‘oodles’ - I dislike breeders who lie for profit and owners who buy dogs without really doing research so then give them up.

Where do you live? We have been looking for a doodle for over a year, but prefer to rescue, and I never see them in DC-area rescues! Actually, I did see one last summer and we put in an application for him, but the lady said they got 50 applications for him!

Please share!!!

Agree, i looked for months for a rescue oodle to no avail. I don't think this is common.

I think PP is saying doodles are given up because they shed and lack characteristics people expect to see in a doodle. Could be why you aren’t seeing any.

Anyone who breeds doodles is breeding for profit. They are backyard breeders.

The rejected doodles go back to the breeders who get to sell them again for more thousands of dollars. These dogs very rarely end up in rescues.

Anonymous wrote:Such weird animosity towards Goldendoodles and their owners. We love ours and think she’s cute. I don’t spend one minute thinking ugly thoughts about other people’s dogs/breeds. I find it so odd that you people make negative generalizations about other people’s dogs. My doodle is 50/50 - she looks like a small golden retriever with more wavy hair, is sweet, loyal, and obedient, and is just the right fit for our family. And she sheds so that should make you doodle haters feel even more gleeful with your scorn.

NP and I think the reason people have strong negative reactions is that 1) 90% of the goldendoodle market is straight-up puppy farms, which is terrible, and 2) goldendoodles are really popular dogs for first time dog owners. They're outrageously cute (I don't understand the people calling them ugly upthread) and they're marketed as being smart and friendly and hypoallergenic and non-shedding (any of these claims could or could not be true for any given dog, but that's marketing for you). So you get a bunch of people who've never had dogs before buying these Jim Henson creatureshop creation looking puppies, setting them up with their own Instagram account, and not really understanding or putting in the work for a dog that's going to end up being quite large. And they take them everywhere, and they lunge at dogs on the lead and jump on anyone who gets close, and the owners are like "She's friendly!" but have no control over them . . . it's a whole thing. I've never met a mean goldendoodle, but I've met a LOT of badly-behaved ones. The owners don't know what they're doing w/r/t basic training and they just count on the Golden sweetness outweighing the fact that the dog's going to be 75 lbs. And then this owner who doesn't know what they're doing tries to sell you on the "breed" with the spiel that the puppy farm sold them on, and it's hard to keep a straight face. Oh, you're all allergic to dogs? Tell me more.

Here we go with doodles are ugly again seriously, even when my dogs hair is a mop he’s getting compliments.

Trendy dog breeds come and go. We got our first dog in 2000, when Jack Russells were super popular.

The problem with trending dogs is that a lot of people are drawn to them because of the hype.

Goldendoodles are tricky because there are so many unethical breeders of them, and bc so much of their reputation is simply based on hype... a hypoallergenic dog is not guaranteed. No shedding does not at all mean "easy care" ... the amount of shaven doodles I've seen due to mats is bonkers. And mats hurt the dogs, it's a huge issue.

I've met some golden doodles that are cute and some that aren't (personal opinion). Sometimes they look very poodly around the eyes and that's not the type of dog I'm into. But to each their own.

The AKC doesn't even recognize this as a breed.

The demand means that you can't count on any reliable traits. I wouldn't take the risk. Puppy mill fodder.

They are some of the smartest dogs you can buy - goldens and poodles are top5 in terms of intelligence.

They don't shed

They are cute as hell, except for the massive mangy looking ones but that's because those were most likely terrible breeders.

My puppy is smarter than 90% of humans..and I don't mean that as a joke. Majority of people are morons, my dog isn't

They are some of the softest dogs I've ever felt

She is a lap dog, loves snuggling

Can go on 4-6 mile hikes no problem

What other dog breed can do all of this?

Plenty of mutts meet that description, except they do shed. If golden doodles shed, would you have bought one? Probably not.

A lot of mutt rescues I see don't look particularly snuggly. Our doodles are like soft, cuddly rag dolls.

Goldendoodles are literally mutts. Literally.

No one is arguing that they aren't.

List of attributes - "what other breed of dog" is like this?
Plenty of mutts are like that.
But mutts aren't snuggly. My doodles are snuggly.
Doodles are mutts. Ergo, mutts are snuggly.
