DH and I don’t see eye to eye on cost of baby items

Privileged much? What a stupid thing to say.

Okay. OP who has an HHI of 300K should not spend any money on baby gear. That makes sense.

If you are in debt that is hard to pay off or have financial concerns going forward ( is one of you quitting your job to take care of the baby, or have you not yet budgeted for childcare?) then you might need to more carefully consider what is reasonable to afford.

Otherwise I suggest that you consider a compromise. A good car seat is probably important and if you will be doing a lot of walking Or especially running on tough terrain you need a strong stroller. But you probably shouldn’t splurge on 20 newborn outfits the baby will wear once and every baby is so different you might wait to understand more about your needs. And a lovely nursery can be done on not too much.

Good luck OP. I think a heart to heart with your DH to find the compromise that matches your finances is in order. Good luck.

OP here. Wow, didn’t know I’d get so much feedback! Our HHI is $300K, we have a hefty savings, no debt besides mortgage. DH easily spends $300 on shoes. He values certain things and I value others. I realize I am likely overreacting, and think a compromise is a good idea. Thanks!

He spends $300 on a pair of shoes for himself but thinks $500 is too much for a combo stroller/car seat? Sounds like a real jerk

300 for shoes you can wear for years is different from a stroller a child will outgrow.

No it’s not. A stroller can be used for years.

Honestly I don’t understand why anyone would buy a new stroller

Do you even have kids? A stroller will be used for YEARS, especially if you have more than 1 child.

The baby’s going to be sitting on a seat full of all kinds of stuff from another kid. Some people might not care for that. It’s not like the OP is impoverished. Other people can think differently from you, just so you know.

The best things to get used imo are:
High end stroller
Special occasion clothes
Baby outerwear (anything from before they can walk)
Swing/bouncers/activity table
Big toys

YouTube helps with this for getting seats on and off for washing. Everything goes in the machine.

OP, the financial issue is going to blow up if you don't address it.

Sorry people came after you OP..as I learned on this forum people can be sooo brutal!

For a income of 300k I would be pissed too at my husband got saying something over a 500 car seat and stroller combo. We had a similar income when my first was born and I got an uppababy vista (1000) and a car seat and have used it now for three kids and it still works great. For the car seat and stroller you will probably use it every day the first year so 500 you are looking at less than 1.50/day.

I have gotten subsequent strollers off or market place etc.

The men (and yes I’m generalizing here) are generally clueless especially on baby gear until after the baby comes. I spent countless hours researching baby gear and my husband didn’t really help or care. Now he sees the value in some solid investment pieces.

As far as clothes a couple of nice outfits and then cheaper target/old navy/gap sale items are great.

People are allowed to buy new strollers if they want to.

A used high end stroller can easily exceed that same $500, though. Also the poster who is down on buying new strollers, where do you think your used one comes from if people don’t buy new?
Anonymous
OP We were in the same position. High income new baby. You will be amazed at how expensive children are. We also had 2 Strollers : one for outdoors casual one for malls shopping doctor visits. You have to see what you need as you go. Also we got cribs that turned into beds. Very helpful. Because preschool/ nanny was expensive.

As some PPs have suggested, I would splurge on some items and not others, depending on your needs/lifestyle. I was overly price conscious when pregnant with my first baby, and bought a relatively inexpensive stroller-carseat combo on amazon sight unseen. I ended up hating both: neither had a rethread harness, the stroller didn’t allow my baby to sit up fully once he was old enough to want to, the stroller storage was a pain to access, and so on — issues I had read about in reviews but dismissed because I liked the price and thought “all this gear is interchangeable anyway.”

We were in the market for a double stroller when expecting our second, and went to try some models out at a baby store. I went in expecting to like a different model, but loved the (more expensive) uppababy vista once I tried it. It remains one of the best baby-related purchases we made, and I look forward to using it for our third baby. Much less stress all around, and on balance that was well worth the expense. I don’t know what stroller would be best for your needs, but I do think that this is an item worth splurging on if you plan to use it often and can swing it in your budget. Your baby will be fine either way, but ease of use may make your life easier during what can be an inherently stressful/hormonal time.

Congratulations on the baby and best of luck with everything!

Anonymous wrote:Take him to a store to actually try out strollers. I was the one (DW) trying to cheap out on things and my DH didn’t really care either way but when we ended up testing them out we realized why ones were more expensive. Ended up with a higher end one but we really love it and both use it everyday.

Yes, this. Push it around, try folding it...make sure you both like the handle height. And make sure the carseat and its base will fit in your cars correctly.

I actually did this before 6 yo was born-it had been many years since older dc and I was starting over. I would actually have been happy with the $100 Walmart stroller carseat one but the base of it overhung my car's seat. I ended up with a mid priced combo.
