Why aren't we using this opportunity to abolish all teachers' unions?

I think some of these parents have untreated mental illness. Or a huge disconnect from reality. Or maybe they're just raging a-holes. Something.

They had no idea how much teachers like PP hate the students they teach and those students’ families.

What I think is weird is that these anti-union posters usually consider themselves pro-market forces and pro-democracy, but their position is inconsistent with that because:

1) unions are the most democratic institution out there. The leaders are elected by direct vote of the members and are up for re-election regularly. Having representation gives workers a voice in the conditions of their lives, which is what democracy is all about.

2) The free market has already told us that teachers are under compensated for the work they perform. How do we know this? Because the school districts are always short staffed and have trouble retaining teachers. This is economics 101 -- if your workers keep leaving, it's because their comp package is not good enough to make up for the conditions/demands.

Anti-union groups and other "conservative" groups use this and other popular forums as a propaganda outlet. I wish someone would moderate dcum. If they did, people would quickly see that 90% of these posts come from the same person or a couple of people.

Jeff *has* checked these kinds of claims and found them to be false. I've been accused of being a right wing propogandist before (maybe by you!) but really I'm just a mom who notices the nonsense happening in schools during the pandemic.

Oh great. Entitled Trump twits are directing their hostility towards teachers now.

Gonna storm the school board meeting next?

Unions are needed because the 'product' of schools is human beings. Students come to school with all kinds of issues beyond a teacher's control and it's the job of teachers to do their best to educate these imperfect little people. Some have advantages and others have disadvantages. Teachers have no control over the individuals that end up in their classroom and the backgrounds/home life/mental, emotional, physical functioning of those individuals. Because of this, they need the protection that a union provides. If a parent/guardian or student has a mental health issue teachers need to be protected from false accusations or violence. If a child has an issue that makes it difficult to learn and the parent/guardian won't do anything about it, teachers need protection from being fired when that student doesn't make enough progress. Even the OP's claim that their child isn't learning may be the teacher's fault - or it may be that the administration has set rules that are limiting the teachers or it may be that the curriculum chosen by the district isn't great or it may be that the OP's children are refusing to work and the OP isn't holding them accountable. Who is the front-line, though? Teachers, so it must be their fault. Hence the need for the union.

It feels as though many or most of these hate threads are started by the same poster who's having trouble processing her rage.

This is COMPLETE B.S. Private school teachers do not need unions. Most people do not need unions in their jobs, even though they are at the front-line. They either are a good teacher or not.

And, as many pointed out, police officers are also the front-line with human beings who blame them all the time, but they do not need unions.

The issue with unions is then the "supervisor" and the "employee" are literally the same person and the TEACHERS who need to be held ACCOUNTABLE are not because they also control the BOARDS (basically funding only pro-union candidates and the other ones have no funding) so that the Teachers/Boards are the exact same person and we get the shittiest teachers in the world.

(Same thing happens with police unions but just with city council. And, both of them control at the state levels, too, due to what is nothing short of bribing political officials to do their bidding.)

We need to get rid of unions.

PERIOD.

Conservative? Conservative!!!! I am as blue/democrat/liberal/progressive as a human being can be! I am anti police unions, as well. I am anti all public-employee unions. This does NOT make me anti union. I am very pro-union. But the difference with most unions and with a public employee union is that a public employee union is controlled by a publicly voted board and the union controls all the money and so controls these elections and there is NO ONE actually representing the public here.

I would be 100% pro STUDENT or PARENT union -- those are the people being quashed in this current system who need a union to get a say. Teachers (and police) do not need a union. The public needs a union. Teachers (and police) have uncontrolled power and it needs to be stopped. If you care about human rights, student rights. minority rights, people rights, you need to be anti teacher (and police) unions.

So first we are paid right wing trolls and now we’re insurrectionists? You’re a conspiracy theorist. No, I’m not a Trump supporter or voter. I voted straight ticket Dem in 2020, 2018, and 2016. I’m just aware of the absolute absurdity of public school pandemic response.

Why anyone teaches today is beyond me. I swear this profession is attacked more than almost other profession. The teachers we have had have been excellent and dedicated. I guess those parents who constantly attack teachers have had bad experiences, because I can’t imagine having the great teachers we have had and then turning around and attacking them.

How about devoting energy to working to improve conditions, pay, etc. for everyone. Do something positive; don’t cut a group down.
