Why aren't we using this opportunity to abolish all teachers' unions?

Apparently, we don't need them.

If there is one thing I learned in this past year, it is that Khan Academy (FOR FREE) does a better job of teaching than a single public school teacher for my three kids (for exorbitant amounts of money they do not deserve).

I would PREFER for my kids to be in front of Khan Academy than the Zoom meetings from these idiot teachers who have no idea how to teach, how to engage students, how to plan lessons, or how to make learning both fun and accessible.

I think the answer is to fire all teachers and NOT replace them. The schools can become social centers, daycare centers, teen centers run by teachers' aides (clearly getting a certificate does not help you be a good teacher) who are paid less, union-free, easy to replace, and actually care about kids. The aides can provide music lessons (like choir), sports coaching, art lessons, drama fun (like theater) and other club activities. The aides can provide tutoring for classes. All classes can be taken via three options:

1) Khan academy where students simply test out at the end of each semester (they don't need to wait until the end of the semester if they want to progress faster) -- FREE for curriculum, approx $100/student for semester test assessments.
2) Curriculum based where students get to choose a curriculum package and finish the worksheets under a scheduled timeline (again, they can finish faster) -- approx $500/student
3) Online-based schools were students get to choose an online, approved provider (APEX learning, Florida Virtual, Acellus, Advantage, Greenways, etc) and finish their classes with an online, approved teacher (yes, their are many teachers from around the world who provide these services and they are VERY easy to hire and they don't leave!) -- approx $1000/student

The choice is the students' (and parents') choice. We have now completely removed teachers (who are useless and overpaid) from the equation. We are now providing a higher level academics (that are more standardized for all students -- not "good" and "bad" schools) were every student receives a premier education and we have removed all the awful teachers. AND, at the same time, with all that extra money, we are providing better extracurriculars for these students through an aide program that allows students to be in top-level music, top-level art, top-level sports, and top-level club (learning languages, doing community gardening, becoming part of social action and charity, etc) because we have so much more funding.

This program would be BETTER for students, BETTER for society, and BETTER for the future.

Yes, teachers are no longer needed. This year has proved that.

What we need are child centers where children can go (what we don't have now at schools because teachers are awful, so churches and other non-profits are providing what schools SHOULD have provided this year). What we need are social centers where children can play, socialize, and become stronger human beings. Students would all need to join one sport, one art/music, and one club.

Now, how do we do it? How do we abolish all unions? This is what our world and society need!!!

This entire forum has turned into a mouthpiece for anti-union groups to troll by constantly posting this nonsense as though it is coming from real NoVa parents.

By the time the union-busters are done, public education will be via Zoom with private prison convict labor.

I’m a lifelong Democrat and think teachers’ unions have gotten 100% out of control.

+1. I’m a lifelong Dem unionized Fedand I agree. We could never, ever, ever have gotten away with the behavior teachers have displayed.

Is your working environment similar to a classroom? Please be honest. Your statement seems like false/unfair equivalence.

I LOVE this so much. Yeah you will leave my public school and I won't need to be irritated by your inane comments at PTA meetings.

Your children will have no way to know how to deal with adversity, people, problem solve with humans. I look forward to not hiring them or engaging with them in person.

Teaching them how to BE HUMAN later in life will be a great cottage industry my child and others (public, private, etc) will make a fortune at.
