Why aren't we using this opportunity to abolish all teachers' unions?

The general public has NO CLUE what a sh***y job teaching actually is.

I caution you in saying that, because in some districts, teachers make more than plenty of other workers, especially government workers, with advanced degree. They are paid for 10 months.

It seems like a great opportunity to overhaul public education in this country. We could then pay good teachers more (which is something that I know Michelle Rhee tried to do in DC many years ago, but the teachers union rejected it and refused to let their members even vote on it) which would increase the quality of teachers we get, and we could get rid of the crappy teachers for good.

It seems like a great opportunity to me.

Correction.
Kids who pay attention to the class and actually do the work are learning.
I just gave a math assessment to my students and all the kids who engage in class were all on grade level.
The ones I don’t hear a peep from and don’t do their work were behind

Parents, if you want to make sure your kids are learning, frequently check their grades on ParentVUE to see if they’re turning in assignments.
It’s not that hard.

Oh so everything is fine?

We need unions because of the appalling conditions many of us work in. Go harass the government, whose salary your taxes ALSO fund, and who have grossly neglected their duties to public health and policy during the pandemic. Enough with the constant blaming of teachers for closed schools among rampant viral spread. It's pathetic, and it makes you look petty and small. There were 79,000 COVID deaths so far this month and all you can do is stomp your feet because you want schools to open. You can't just open everything up and pretend that the pandemic is over because parents are tired of their kids.

Stop it!!

You act like you’re the only essential workers out there. Many of us have been working this entire time. I’m not part of a union. NO one is advocating for me.

I’m not going around whining constantly.

What is your industry? Why can’t you unionize?

I love these threads where they advocate that we just fire all of the teachers because there is a plethora of teachers who are waiting to be hired in their place!

I think some of these parents have untreated mental illness. Or a huge disconnect from reality. Or maybe they're just raging a-holes. Something.

Because unions serve a valuable purpose. Unions allow workers to have some say in their salary, working conditions, safety, etc. Many of the workplace benefits you have, you can thank the union movement (even if you are not in one). That is not a bad thing. Even in "white collar" jobs.

all you whiny parents who don't realize what teachers really do without a pandemic and during the pandemic and demanding your place in line are the reason we need unions and will never get rid of unions.

i'm forever grateful for wtu for what they have done this year. there are still dcps schools this very moment without soap and proper running water - shock and horror it wasn't in ward 3.

ferabee has been able to post photos of him walking around a care room but not able to go to target and buy soap.

You are what’s wrong with this country.

It feels as though many or most of these hate threads are started by the same poster who's having trouble processing her rage.

I guess better here than raging at her own kids.

Teachers have bad working conditions and pay? That’s a laugh. Maybe in some states, but in many other states they can earn tenure and get a nice 6-figure salary and pension.

Very few districts offer pensions anymore, it's too cost prohibitive. They are just 401ks or 403bs like all the other jobs in America.

You don't need to caution us. If those other people are unhappy with their jobs or salaries, then they can go into teaching. But they don't, because they probably don't want to deal with a****** parents.

Who is "we?" What gave you the mistaken impression that you have any power or authority over teachers, administrators, school districts or unions? Were you empowered by signing or circulating yet another meaningless online petition?

They complain on these forums, because they don't actually have any power and they know it.

yes i am happy people are on here raging instead of on their kids

are these just women who finally realized how sh*tty they have been treated all of these years and now want all women (i.e. teachers) to be treated the same way.

there is a special place in hell for women who crap on other women

OP, the better question is Why are our public officials not using this time to pass a prohibition on teacher union protests/walkouts like in Chicago and NYC? Catch up, DC!
